A display box has a container part 2 and a lid 3. The container part 2 has three compartments 6, 7 and 8 and the lid 3 has a window 4 therein that overlies compartment 7. The compartments 6 and 8 may contain bundles of species of say artificial flowers and compartment 7 may contain a bundle of representatives of each species so that viewing through window 4 gives a good indication of the overall contents of the box. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Display boxes This invention concerns display boxes and, in particular, boxes for displaying items, such as artificial flowers.
Artificial flowers are now manufactured in a wide variety of styles and colours, particularly in view of the increase in their use in.home flower arrangement and for weddings. For supply from wholesalers to florists-the flowers are arranged in boxes frequently with transparent lids according to the type of flower.
These boxes usually contain only one type of flower either all of the same colour or of an assortment of colours. When florists wish to obtain a range of flowers types of the same, they often have to purchase larger quantities of each type of flower than they require or colours of flower which again they do not require.
Often florists are reluctant to do this due to the expense involved and so make up arrangements from a limited selection of flowers and colours.
This can be particularly inconvenient when flower arrangements, such as bouquets, are required to match the colour of a bridesmaid dress.
The object of this invention is to provide a box suitable for holding and dispiaying a wide selection of flower types.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a display box comprising a base having a number of compartments and a lid having a window therein overlying one of the compartments when the box is closed.
The lid may be separate from the box base or may be attached say at one edge thereof. The window will usually have a covering of transparent, say plastics, sheet material and is preferably situated to one side of the lid. In that case it is preferable to have a narrower compartment at one side of the box so that the window overlies the next inner compartment thereto.
Preferred material for the box is cardboard such as of the corrugated sandwich type. Three compartments may simply be formed by two dividing strips preferably provided by a pair of opposite sides of a rectangle formed of cardboard strip positioned appropriately in the box base. To hold flower stems an inclined crosspiece is interconnected with the dividing strips.
The display box of the invention has the advantage of being able to hold in a compartment a selection of flower types of the same colour to be seen through the display window. The other compartments can then hold further quantities of the displayed flowers. Thus for a wide selection of flower types and colours a florist only needs one box for each colour rather than a box for each colour and type. Selection of flowers for making up arrangements is thus simplified. Furthermore less expenditure is needed at any one time by the florist and so cash flow problems may be avoided.
In addition the boxes of the invention may themselves be used in making up shop window and shelf displays, particularly if the lids of the boxes are printed attractively.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a display box containing species bundles in a concealed position and a bundle of representations of each species in a visible position.
This invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display box from the front; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the display box of Figure 1 from the rear; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of the box of Figures 1 and 2 with lid removed; Referring to the drawings, a rectangular cardboard display box 1 has a container part 2 and a lid 3. The lid 3 has a generally rectangular window 4 therein covered by a sheet of transparent plastics material 5.
The container part 2 has three compartments 6, 7 and 8 formed therein by a rectangle of cardboard strip 9. Compartments 7 and 8 are substantially the same size and compartment 6 is approximately half the width of compartments 7 and 8 when the lid 3 is on the window 4 overlies compartment 7.
An angled strip 10 is provided across the box its intended lower side in which strip flower stems can be retained by making holes therein as appropriate. The strip 10 is actually notched so as to interfit with notches in the longest sides of the rectangle 9.
In use, the compartment 7 will usually be filled with such a display of artificial flowers that a good indication of the contents of the box can be obtained at a glance. The other compartments 6 and 8 can then be filled with further quantities of the displayed flowers. The narrower compartment 6 may be found to be suitable for retaining certain types of flower.
It will be appreciated that, although a rectangular box and/or window has been described with artificial flowers, other shapes of box and/or window may also be made according to the invention and that other products may be suitably displayed in boxes of the invention.
