Embossing. - A machine for impressing stereotype and like matrices in a dry state, which is also applicable to impressing other plastic sheets such as lead sheets subsequently making galvanoplastic blocks, comprises a fixed flat table 1, carrying the typographic or like block and the matrix blank, and a rocking platen 2 having an arcuate contacting surface engaging the blank, the platen being actuated by oscillatory levers 9 carrying a cylinder 7 which rolls on the upper surface of the platen. A resilient sheet may be placed between the blank and the platen 2 and is preferably fixed to the latter. The platen is provided with side cheeks 6 resting on the table 1, these cheeks having teeth 6<a> on their upper edges engaging gear wheels on the ends of the cylinder 7. At each end of the stroke of the cylinder 7 the platen is tilted by means of projections 6<1> thereon engaging hollows in the table 1. The cylinder 7 is rotated from a main shaft 13 by worm gearing 14, 15, sprockets 17, 18 and chains 27, and gears 20, 8 on the shaft 19 of tEe sprocket 18 and the cylinder 7 respectively. The shaft 13 is driven by reversing gear consisting of pulleys 21, 23, the former fixed to the shaft 13 and the latter connected thereto through bevel gears 24 to 26. In the case of an electric drive, any usual form of reversing device may be adopted. Jockey pulleys 28 are provided for maintaining the tension of the chains 27 in both directions of running.
