Abstract

212,919. Wingfield, B. R., (Assignee of Riemenschneider, F.). March 13, 1923, [Convention date]. Addition to 195,648. Shaping helical surfaces.- The machine described in the parenti Specification is provided with modified means for driving the work spindle and for positively returning the tool slides on completion of a drill. A shaft 74 driven through bevel gearing from a shaft 72 carries two crank-discs 76, 77 whose crank-pins, 180‹ apart, are connected to wheels 80, 81 which are loose on a shaft 123 and engage loose pinions 82, 83 on the work spindle 19. The pinions 82, 83 are provided with clutch teeth coacting with teeth on a double clutch sleeve 86 driving the work spindle. The stroke of the drive of the pinions 82, 83 may be varied by adjusting the crank-pins. During the cutting operation the clutch is held in engagement with the pinion 82 by means of a lever 90 coacting with a projection on the clutch-operating lever 92. At the end of the cutting operation a rack 103 engaging a wheel 111 on the tool-feeding spindle 5, is moved slightly backward by contact with an abutment 109 whereupon a tappet 104 on the rack acts through lever mechanism to disengage the lever 90. The clutch sleeve 86 is then shifted by a spring 98 to engage the pinion 83 so that the backward motion of the spindle is continued to take up a fresh blank. During this long backward movement the rack 103 is also returned by the abutment 109, thus actuating the wheel 111 on the spindle 5 to return the 'tools to their starting position. To permit this movement a clutch 120 between the feed ratchet wheel 11 and the spindle 5 is disengaged by means of a lever 117 which is actuated by a spring when, on completion of a work piece, a pin 118 drops into a notch on a disc 119 connected to the feed wheel. At the end of the forward movement produced by the wheel 81 a cam 121 thereon re-engages the clutch 86 with the pinion 82 for a fresh series of cutting operations.
