Abstract

A ventilation port for an automobile passenger compartment comprises fins 22, 23 arranged to vary the direction of the air stream leaving the port and a butterfly valve 20 arranged to vary the air throughput of the port. The fins and butterfly valve are both mounted in the cylinder 15 and are operationally connected together in such a manner that the degree of opening of the butterfly valve is a function of the degree of opening of the fins. The cylinder 15 is also rotatable within an outer cylinder 11. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Ventilation port for an automobile passenger compartment This invention relates to a port which is normally used for ventilating the interior of an automobile passenger compartment, and is preferably disposed on the vehicle dashboard.
In conventional systems for ventilating the interior of an automobile passenger compartment, the air is led in through ports which can be regulated manually by the occupants and are generally fitted with mobile fins able to position the emerging air stream in the required direction.
The air throughput of said ports is normally controlled by a butterfly valve disposed upstream of the port and operated by suitable controls.
Thus in order to regulate the air throughput and position the air stream, the user must carry out at least two separate operations, the first involving the manipulation of the butterfly valve control member and the second the manipulation of the fin direction control member.
One object of the present invention is to enable the air throughput to be regulated and the direction of the air stream into the passenger compartment to be determined by means of a single regulating operation.
A further object is to provide a device which is easily operable by the user, for example by simple pressure.
These objects are attained according to the invention by a ventilation port for an automobile passenger compartment comprising a first outer cylinder provided with resilient positioning lugs, a second cylinder disposed concentrically to said first cylinder, said second cylinder being rotatably supported by the first cylinder, first valve means arranged to vary the direction of the air stream leaving the port and disposed on said second cylinder, and second valve means arranged to vary the air throughput of the port and disposed on said second cylinder, characterised in that said first and second valve means are operationally connected together in such a manner that the degree of opening of said second valve means is a function of the degree of opening of said first valve means.
Preferably said first valve means are constituted by positionable fins and the second valve means by a butterfly valve comprising a seal gasket on its circumference.
The characteristics and advantages of the present invention will be more apparent from the description of one embodiment given hereinafter by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a sectional elevation on the line I-I of Figure 2 showing the ventilation port in its closed position, Figure 2 is a plan view of the port in its closed position, and Figure 3 is a sectional elevation of the port in its completely open position.
With reference to Figure 1, a port according to the invention, indicated overall by 10, is composed of a first cylinder 11 provided on its outer surface with resilient lugs 12 and an annular projection 14, both being necessary for snapfitting the port 10 to a support wall 13 of the vehicle.
A circular projection 1 6 present on the inner surface of the first cylinder 11 engages with a complementary circular seat 1 7 provided in the outer surface of a second cylinder 15, which is internal and concentric to the first and is free to rotate by virtue of the rotary coupling thus formed.
A seal gasket 1 8 of soft elastic materiai is also provided between the surfaces of the two cylinders 11 and 1 5.
A circular butterfly flow control valve 20 rotates on one of its diameters about a pin 1 9 fixed to the interior of the second cylinder 1 5, and is provided with a circumferential lip gasket 21.
Two directional fins 22 and 23 which rotate about pins 24 and 25 provided in the surface of the cylinder 1 5 engage with each other to close one end of said cylinder.
Said fins 22 and 23 are provided respectively with arms 28 and 29 and relative pivots 31 and 32 on which the ends of a link 30 are positioned to form an articulated connection.
The butterfly valve 20 and fins 22 and 23 are interconnected for simultaneous rotation by an arm 35 pivoted at 34 to one end 33 of the fin 23, and at 36 to an arm 37 connected to the butterfly valve 20.
Figure 2 shows a knurled zone 38 provided on the surface of the fin 22, and which is pressed for opening purposes.
On pressing against the knurled zone 38, the fin 22 rotates about the pins 24, and the link 30 also causes rotation of the fin 23 about the pins 25.
The arm 35, hinged to the fin 23, simultaneously causes rotation of the butterfly valve 20 about the pin 19, thus opening it. The air throughput to the vehicle passenger compartment is thus regulated by the degree of opening of the butterfly valve 20. For this reason, the lever ratio, i.e. the ratio of the distance between the axes of the pins 25 and 34 to the distance between the axes of the pins 36 and 19, is chosen such that a small opening movement of the fins 22 and 23 produces a sufficient opening of the butterfly valve 20.
The subsequent closure of the fins 22 and 23 also closes the butterfly valve 20.
The rotary coupling between the cylinders 11 and 1 5 formed by the projection 1 6 and circular seat 1 7 also enables the air stream to be orientated in the required direction.
Said articulated arm connection between the fins 22 and 23 for directing the air stream and the butterfly valve 20 thus enables one manual regulating operation to be dispensed with.
