Abstract

An improved acoustic-type flow meter for accurately measuring the velocity of heterogeneous fluids. The meter operates as a time-multiplexed phase-locked loop and may be divided into a number of sybsystems including a subsystem (12) for acoustic-wave transmission, a subsystem (14) for error detection and summation, and a subsystem (16) for reference-signal generation. The principal components of subsystem (12) are a pair of acoustic transducers (20, 22), a transmitter (24), a protection network (26), an agc circuit (30), and a signal detector (32). The principal components of subsystem (14) are a phase detector (100), a decoder (102), three integrators (104, 106, 108), and a summing amplifier (110). The principal components of subsystem (16) are a ramp generator (150), a multiplexer (152), a multiplier (154), and a comparator (156).
