Abstract
A laminate component part for a garment comprising a layer of knitted fabric sandwiched between two layers of woven fabric and bonded or adhesively secured together.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Laminate component part for a garment
The present invention relates to a laminate component part for a garment such as a collar, cuff, lapel, pocket edging or flap, facing or other component part for a garment, and a process for manufacture thereof.
It is known to manufacture collar portions for ladies' dresses or blouses at economic cost by placing two layers of knitted fabric material, reverse side to reverse side, on either side of a double-sided fusible interlining and bonding the layers together by the application of heat and pressure to form a laminate. Subsequently the particular shape of the component is stamped out of the thus produced laminate cloth by means of a template powered by a hydraulic press. The fusible interlining used in this process is made woven or bonded material impregnated on both sides with an adhesive or bonding agent. The product is distinct appearance having two "face" sides and has highly desirable characteristics.
In the hope of providing a new product of desirable appearance and texture and of economic construction, we have attempted to provide a garment component part wherein the quantity of knitted fabric is reduced by sandwiching an interlining layer of fabric, such as of polyester material, between two layers of woven fabric and bonding such together. The resultant product was found to be unsatisfactory since such was hard and too stiff and rigid for comfort and for processing.
According to the present invention a laminate component part for a garment comprises a layer of knitted fabric sandwiched between two layers of woven fabric and bonded or adhesively secured together.
Also according to the present invention there is provided a process for manufacturing a laminate component part for a garment comprising arranging a layer of knitted fabric impregnated with a bonding agent between two layers of woven fabric, applying heat and pressure to secure the layers together to form a laminate and subsequently cutting the laminate to the required shape. Suitable edge trim such as lace or picot stitching may be applied to finish the item and cover the cut edges.
The resultant product is found to be flexible so as to have acceptable handling characteristics and when incorporated in a garment is comfortable to wear. Further, a desirable and attractive product results wherein and economies in the use of knitted fabric are achieved.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a schematic section through a laminate cloth.
The drawing shows a section through a laminate cloth comprising a layer of knitted fabric 1 which is a double-sided fusible interlining made of 28 gauge double knitted 100% polyester fabric impregnated with a glue as bonding agent and sandwiched between two pieces of woven fabric 2 and 2 which are each placed reverse side to said interlining of knitted fabric 1. The laminate component cloth is bonded together by the application of heat and pressure as will now be described.
The layer of woven fabric 2 is placed reverse side to the layer of knitted fabric 1 and a layer of woven fabric 3 is placed reverse side to the layer of knitted fabric 1. The layers of fabric 1, 2 and 3 are then bonded together by the application of heat and pressure so as to melt the adhesive or bonding agent and permit the layer to be joined together. The fusing may be effected by electrically controlled fusing machines, such as
Model M823 made by Reliant Tooling Company
Limited although other machines may be used.
The adhesive or bonding agent is allowed to cool so as to bond the layers together to form a laminate cloth and subsequently component parts such as collars or cuffs are stamped out of the cloth by means of a template powered by a hydraulic press, such as made by Stafford Ltd., using metal templates or knives, such as produced by Northern Press Knife Company Limited although other machines may be used.
If desired, the cut edges of the component parts which have been stamped out may be protected and decorated by suitable edge trim or the like, e.g. by means of decorative stitches or by attaching lace or other trimmings. For example, picot stitching may be carried out on a single two needle picoetta and fagoting machine, such as class 53300 made by Union Special GmbH although other machines may be used.
Alternatively lace or trimmings may be attached by industrial sewing machines in known manner.
The bonding agent is preferably a thermoplastic adhesive resin.
