Abstract
To form a junction for example in, or for, a branched pipe for a vehicle exhaust system, a portion of tube between its ends is formed to a D-shaped cross section by flattening an arc of the tube section against an anvil, with an arcuate die. The tube is then cut through the arcuate section, and folded back about the unsevered flat section such that the flattened portions abut. Alternatively the tube is completely severed and the two parts are placed such that their flattened portions abut. The flattened portions are then connected, e.g. by welding, and the joined ends may then be telescoped in, and welded to, a junction pipe. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Method of producing bifurcated joints
This invention relates to a method of producing a bifurcated pipe junction, and to pipe junctions produced by the method.
Bifurcated pipe junctions, such as are known for branched vehicle exhaust systems, have comprised two branch pipes each formed at one end to a "D" shaped cross section and welded together with the flattened portions of the D-shaped cross section abutting each other.
However in forming the D-shaped cross section at the end of each branch pipe, a length of pipe is placed in one half of a die set that reproduces the required shape of the branch pipe, and the other half of the die set is forced against the pipe to partly form the D-shaped end. This pressing operation distorts the flattened portion of the D-shaped section which must be straightened by inserting a plug whilst the pipe is still held in the die set.
It has now been found that if a D-shaped cross section is formed not at the end of each branch tube but in the middle of a length of tubing, not only can the length be cut to provide both branch tubes but also the tubes do not require the flattened portion of the D-shaped section to be straightened with a plug.
Thus according to the invention a method of producing a bifurcated pipe junction includes the steps of
a) forming a portion of a tube between its ends to a D-shaped cross section by flattening a section of the tube against an anvil with an arcuate die;
b) cutting through at least the arc of the Dshaped section; and
c) joining the severed, or partly severed, parts of the tube together with the flattened sections abutting each other.
Moreover it has been found that if the tube is severed only through the arc of the D-shaped cross section, the two parts may then be bent across the unsevered flattened portion of the D-shaped section until the tube is in effect folded back on itself with the flattened portions abutting.
Thus according to another aspect of the invention the method includes only partially severing the tube and then bending the uncut flattened portion of the
D-shaped section to fold the tube back on itself.
It should be understood that the angle of bifurcation can be predetermined by the choice of a suitable anvil plate. A flat anvil plate tends to produce an inward belling of the flat of the D-shaped cross section, thus making the cutting of the arcuate portion more difficult, and therefore an anvil plate having an inverted V-shape is generally better.
The invention also includes teiescoping the joined
D-shaped ends into a tubular junction pipe, and the invention permits a parallel connector pipe to be readily telescoped over the assembly.
A method of producing a bifurcated pipe joint will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic view of a bifurcated pipe junction and allied junction pipe;
Figure 2 is a schematic view of a tube about to be formed to a D-shaped cross section; and
Figure 3 is a side view of a tube that has been formed and partially severed.
A length of tube 5 is formed to D-shaped cross section by flattening a section of the tube against an anvil 6 using an arcuate die block 7.
The arcuate cutout 8 of the die block 7 is forced towards the anvil 6 in a suitable press, and when the die block 7 bottoms-out against the anvil 6, the tube 5 has been formed to the shape shown in Figure 3.
The formed tube shown in Figure 3 is then partially severed by sawing through the arc of the D-shaped section, as indicated at 9, and the partially severed tube is folded back on itself to yield two branch pipes 1 as in Figure 1.
The branch pipes 1 are welded together at 3 and 4 and a junction pipe 2 is telescoped over the Dshaped ends of the branch pipes, and is circumferen tially welded thereon.
In a variation of the method described above the formed tube is cut right through, and the tubes are also welded together along the ends of the abutting flat portions of the D-shaped cross section.
