Abstract

A towing device adapted to be mounted on a towing vehicle mounts thereon a fifth wheel trailer coupling (not shown). The device comprises elongate carriers 1 mounted on the chassis 4 of the towing vehicle so as to extend generally longitudinally of the vehicle, and a mounting plate 2 which is connected to the carriers 1 and which is arranged to mount the fifth wheel trailer coupling thereon. The mounting plate 2 is connected to the elongate carriers 1 by means of brackets 2a which are displaceable along the length of the elongate carriers 1 to adjust the position of the fifth wheel trailer coupling when mounted on the mounting plate 2. The elongate carriers 1 are channel shaped and provided with lateral adjusting holes throughout their length, and the brackets 2a have mounting holes 5 which can be moved into registry with and be secured to any selected adjusting holes of the carriers 1. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A towing device This invention relates to a towing device adapted to be mounted on a towing vehicle in order to mount thereon a fifth wheel trailer coupling.
Various constructions of towing-related devices or mechanisms are known, which serve to receive a fifth wheel coupling on a mounting plate provided with reinforcement ribs, the mounting plate having a standard pattern of apertures.
There are also towing-related devices which can be displaced along the longitudinal axis of the towing vehicle on which they are provided. This type of device comprises a basic frame with rack and pinion bars.
A slide is arranged above this other arrangement with an operating and locking mechanism, which is designed as a displaceable unit, which receives the actual fifth wheel coupling.
The disadvantages of these known devices and mechanisms are the structurally consuming designs, heavy weight and high cost.
The present invention has been developed primarily, though not exclusively, with a view to providing a towing device which can be mounted on a towing vehicle in order to mount thereon a fifth wheel trailer coupling, in which the device is simple to manufacture and can be used, without the aid of a basic framework and a slide, to permit ready displacement of the fifth wheel coupling when required.
Various embodiments of fifth wheel trailer couplings can be used with the device, which are simple and quick to mount on the device.
According to the invention there is provided a towing device adapted to be mounted on a towing vehicle in order to mount thereon a fifth wheel trailer coupling, said device comprising elongate carriers to be mounted on the chassis of the towing vehicle so as to extend generally longitudinally of the vehicle, and a mounting plate which is connected to the carriers and which is arranged to mount the fifth wheel trailer coupling thereon: in which the mounting plate is connected to the elongate carriers by means of brackets which are displaceable along the length of the elongate carriers to adjust the position of the fifth wheel trailer coupling when m .nted on the mounting plate.
The invention will now be described in detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective illustration of a first embodiment of towing device according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective illustration of a further embodiment.
Referring now to the drawings, there are shown schematically two embodiments of towing device or towing-related mechanisms to be mounted at the rear of a towing vehicle in order to mount thereon a fifth wheel trailer coupling. As is well known, "fifth wheel" couplings are used to couple together towing vehicles and trailers, and the fifth wheel or saddle coupling which is used with the embodiments of towing device may take any suitable form of commerciaily available construction of fifth wheel. Accordingly, the fifth wheel couplings are not shown in the drawing.
A vehicle chassis of a towing vehicle comprises guides 4 (Figure 2) which run parallel to each other and to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.
Elongate U-shaped or channel profile carriers 1 are arranged on the guides 4 of the chassis. The carriers 1 comprise lateral adjusting holes or apertures arranged in their limbs across their longitudinal axis and aligned with each other, which serve to receive bolts and enable mounting brackets (3 in Figure 1, 2a in Figure 2) to be positioned where desired.
The brackets 2a and 3 are designed in such a way that they can be placed vertically into the Ushaped carriers 1 and are displaceable longitudinally therein. The brackets comprise mounting holes or apertures 5 arranged across their longitudinal axes, which can be engaged with the apertures in the limbs of the U-shaped carriers 1. Apertures 6 are provided in the surface of the bracket 3, which serve to secure a mounting plate 2 with a standard arrangement of apertures (not shown in detail) to mount thereon any suitable construction of fifth wheel trailer coupling.
As shown in Figure 2, the bracket 2a is designed in one piece with the mounting plate 2, so that the apertures 6 are then unnecessary.
For the one piece construction shown in Figure 2, the mounting plate 2 and brackets 2a can be manufactured as a cast piece.
The brackets 3 can also be formed individually as cast pieces, so that a mounting plate can be screwed or bolted thereon as a finished element.
A welded construction is also possible.
The described embodiments permit and simplify the method of securing any type of fifth wheel trailer coupling to the mounting plate, since -the latter has a standard aperture arrangement for a fifth wheel coupling and is simple and rapid to displace when it is required to alter the position of the fifth wheel coupling.
Claims

in which the mounting plate is connected to the elongate carriers by means of brackets which are displaceable along the length of the elongate carriers to adjust the position of the fifth wheel
