1290683 Temporary axles; vehicle frames; fifth wheel couplings CUNHA PRODUCTS Inc 11 Sept 1969 56535/70 Divided out of 1290682 Headings B7D B7H and B7T A vehicle includes a chassis and apparatus mounting a fifth wheel for selective slidable movement over the chassis, the apparatus comprising a plate 250a having the fifth wheel 240 mounted thereon, a plurality of rollers carried by the plate and spring urged towards the chassis so that when the fifth wheel is unloaded the plate stands clear above the chassis but when the fifth wheel is loaded the plate rests on the chassis. In the embodiment shown, a tractor chassis 24 and dolly chassis 32 each support a movable fifth wheel 238, 240 respectively so that, when the tractor is used without the dolly, the fifth wheel 238 can be positioned suitably adjacent the rear of chassis 24 to support a trailer, and, when the tractor is used with the dolly, fifth wheel 238 is moved to its stored position (as shown), adjacent the cab 22 and fifth wheel 240 is positioned suitably, e.g. bridging the tractor and dolly, to support a trailer such that the tractor and dolly share the loads. The fifth wheel coupling of the dolly comprises the plate 250a supporting a trunnion support 252a which mounts the fifth wheel for tilting movement about a transverse axis. The plate has a plurality of roller means comprising first means 256a and second means 258. Each of these means (Figs. 5 and 6 or 7, not shown) comprise a roller element which is spring-urged downwardly relative to the plate 250a, the arrangement being such that when the fifth wheel is unloaded plate 250a will be raised above the chassis by contact of the roller elements therewith but when the fifth wheel is loaded the roller means will be retracted against their springs to allow plate 250a to seat on the chassis. Hence, when the fifth wheel is unloaded the plate 250a is freely slidable relative to the chassis to permit suitable positioning of the fifth wheel. Locking bolts 254a on the plate are co-operable with spaced apertures 244a, 248a in the chassis to lock the fifth wheel coupling in position. The tractor and dolly may be as disclosed in Specification 1,290,682.
