Abstract

An insulator for sealing panels of insulator material of a kind used for insulation of walls and roofs of buildings, comprises a strip having a front face 1 and a rear face, a projection 2 extending perpendicularly from the rear face of the strip, and a layer of resilient material 3 disposed on the rear face adjacent each side of the projection, rear facing surfaces of the layers being provided with adhesive 4 (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Seal for insulator panels This invention relates to an insulator for sealing panels of insulator material of a kind used for insulation of walls and roofs of buildings.
Panels composed of material such as rigid foamed plastics materials are commonly used for insulation of walls, roofs and floors of buildings.
Such panels are also disposed as insulators within cavity walls. Insulation by means of panels is less effective if there are spaces between adjoining panels through which air or moisture can circulate.
According to the present invention an insulator comprises a strip having a front face and a rear face, a projection extending perpendicularly from the rear face of the strip, and a layer of resilient material disposed on the rear face adjacent each side of the projection, rear facing surfaces of the layers being provided with adhesive.
The strip and projection are preferably arranged to form a T-shape when viewed in cross-section.
In use of the insulator the projection is inserted between adjacent panels of insulator material and the rear surface of the resilient material pressed against the latter causing adhesion thereto and forming a seal against passage of air and moisture. The layer of resilient material serves to accommodate irregularities in the surface of the panels. Suitable resilient materials include foamed plastics such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene and butyl rubber. Fibrous materials such as nonwoven fabrics may also be used.
The layer of resilient material may be provided with a self-adhesive coating of adhesive. The latter is preferably covered with a removable strip of paper to protect it prior to use.
Insulators in accordance with the invention mar be manufactured by applying strips of doublesided self-adhesive foamed tape to surfaces of T-shaped plastics strip.
The strip may be of sufficient width to cover nail heads or screw holes in the edges of the panels of insulating material. The strip can be formed from metal or plastics materials including polyvinyl chloride.
The invention is further described by way of example with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 illustrates an insulator in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of an insulator in use.
The insulator illustrated in Figure 1 comprises a T-shaped member composed of polyvinyl chloride.
The member comprises a strip 1 and projection 2.
The table of the T-shape may have a width of 30 mm and the stalk a length of 15 mm. The thickness of the material may be 2 mm. Two strips 3 of foamed polyethylene, secured to the strip adjacent the projection, are provided with a coating of adhesive 4 by which they may be secured in use to panels of insulating material.
Figure 2 shows a similar insulator in use between two panels of rigid foamed material 6, 7.
The reference numerals of Figure 1 are used to designate corresponding integers of Figure 2. The projection 2 is disposed between the panels 6, 7 and the adhesive-coated strips 3 prevent movement of air or passage of moisture between the panels. The strip is wider than that of Figure 1, having a dimension of 50 mm, so that heads of nails 5 or other fixtures are concealed.
Alternative dimensions to those mentioned above may be used as may be convenient.
1. An insulator comprising a strip having a front face and a rear face, a projection extending perpendicularly from the rear face of the strip, and a layer of resilient material disposed on the rear face adjacent each side of the projection, rear facing surfaces of the layers being provided with adhesive.
2. An insulator as clatmed in claim 1, wherein the strip and projection are arranged to form a T-shape in cross-section.
3. An insulator as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the adhesive comprises a selfadhesive coating covered prior to use with a removable strip of paper.
4. An insulator as claimed in any preceding claim, comprising polyvinyl chloride.
5. An insulator as claimed in any preceding claim arranged to seal adjacent panels of insulator material of a kind used for insulation of walls and roofs of buildings.
6. An insulator substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
