Abstract
The invention discloses a surgical scrubbing device, which includes a base planar wall part 12 having two opposite planar faces; and a foam part 22 having a generally block formation and being in face-to-face bonded relationship with one planar face of on the base wall, the foam part being made of open-cell structure. The moulded brush portion has an array of individual bristles 20 integrally formed to the second face of the base planar wall. A non-distributed surgical scrubbing agent is located in satchets 24 to be released into the foam part after piercing with plastics nail cleaner 32 (Fig. 1, not shown); and a sealed bag of synthetic film encloses the brush portion, the base planar wall part, the foam part, and the scrubbing agent. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Surgical scrubbing device
Background of Invention 1. Field of Invention The present invention relates to surgical scrub devices.
In US Patent 3,447,181 a surgical scrub device is described in which a moulded brush portion is provided comprising a backing and bristles made of synthetic resin and a porous foam or sponge of selected size is fitted to the backing. Surgical detergent or the like is forced into the sponge, preferably at various depths for timed release during scrubbing. The surgical scrub device thereafter is packaged and sterilized.
A problem with the mentioned existing surgical scrubbing device is that, due to the fact that liquid is present in the enclosed outer package, it may happen that the sterile condition of the contents is destroyed.
It is an object of the invention to suggest a scrubbing device in which the mentioned problem is overcome.
2. Brief Description of Invention According to the invention, a surgical scrubbing device includes
(a) a base planar wall part having two opposite planar faces;
(b) a foam part having a generally block formation and being in face-to-face bonded relationship with one planar face of the base wall, the foam part being made of open-cell structure;
(c) a moulded brush portion having an array of individual bristles integrally formed to the second face of the base planar wall;
(d) a non-distributed surgical scrubbing agent located to be released into the foam part; and
(e) a sealed bag of synthetic film enveloping the brush portion, the base planar wall part, the foam part, and the scrubbing agent.
Tne scrubbing agent may be located in or adjacent the foam part.
The non-distributed surgical scrubbing agent may be in the form of dry powder to which water is to be added for causing foaming thereof, or a liquid surgical scrubbing agent provided in at least one piercable satchet.
In the case of dry powder, it may be provided in the foam part or between the foam part and the base wall, preferably in at least one recess provided in the base wall.
In the case of a piercable satchet or satchets, a piercing element, e.g. in the form of a nail cleaning member made of stiff synthetic plastics material, may also be provided in the sealed bag. Guide passages may be provided in the foam part to guide such a piercing member towards each satchet for piercing it.
Holes or apertures may be provided in the base wall part so as to allow foam to pass easily from the foam part to the bristles.
3. Description of the Drawing
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings.
In the drawings there is shown in
Figure 1 a side view of a packaged surgical scrubbing device in accordance with the invention
Figure 2 a plan view on the one face of the base wall along arrows Il-Il in Figure 1 and with the foam part and packaging cover removed;
Figure 3 an end view of the scrubbing device seen along arrow Ill in Figure 1 but with the packaging cover removed;
Figure 4 a sectional side view of the scrubbing device seen along arrows lV-lV in Figure 3; and
Figure 5 an isometric view of the device illustrated in Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, the surgical scrubbing device 10 basically includes a U-channel shaped base wall 12 having a first face 14 and a second opposite face 16, a moulded brush portion 18 with bristles 20 integrally formed with the face 16 of the base wall 12, a foam part or sponge 22 of block shape and moulded or otherwise bonded to the face 14 of the wall 12, a non-distributed surgical scrubbing agent satchet 24 located between the foam part 22 and the face 14 of the base 12, and a sealed packaging bag or cover of synthetic film 26 enclosing the parts as mentioned.
The foam part or sponge 22 is made of suitable material such as open wall polyurethane foam.
The base wall 12 has two side walls 12.1,12.2 and at least one recess 28 (or 30) in which the non-distributed surgical scrubbing agent is provided. The surgical scrubbing agent may be provided as a dry powder in the recess 28 (or 30) to which water is to be added or it may be provided in liquid form in satchets 24, one of each being located in each recess 28 or 30. A single satchet 24 or two satchets may be provided. The satchet is to be pierced for causing the liquid agent to flow into the foam portion 22 prior to adding water and scrubbing.
The device 10 further may include a piercing member in the form of a plastics nail cleaner 32 having a sharp end 34 for piercing the satchet(s) 24. For assisting in guiding the pointed end 34 guide holes 36 and 38 may be provided in the foam portion 22.
During use, after the sealed outer film bag 26 has been opened and has been removed, the piercing member 32 is used to pierce the satchet 24 located in each recess 28 or 30 and then the foam sponge 22 is suitably impregnated with water and used in normal manner for scrubbing purposes. Alternatively, where the surgical scrubbing agent is provided as dry powder, water would merely be added to the foam sponge 22 so as to cause foaming of the powder.
The member 32 obviously also can be used to clean the nails of the user.
As shown in Figures 1 and 4, the base wall 12 may have apertures 40 for allowing the liquid scrubbing agent to flow to the bristles 18.
