Abstract
A screw-threaded fastener 10 for attaching articles 28 of predetermined thicknesses to sheet metal 30, the fastener 10 including a head 12 at one end, a generally cylindrical elongate shank, a tip 22 at the other end, a plurality of discrete threaded sections 26a and 26b on the shank and at least one annular unthreaded shank portions 24 between each pair of the thread sections 26a and 26b. The annular unthreaded shank portion 24 is spaced from the head at a predetermined distance or at predetermined distances which correspond to the predetermined thickness of articles to be fastened. Thus, when the head 12 of the fastener 10 is seated, the fastener is free to rotate without continued advancement with the sheet metal 30 being located at the unthreaded portion 24. Naturally when a plurality of unthreaded portions 24 are included the fastener 10 can accommodate articles of different thickness. The annular portions 24 can be given a greater axial extent to allow the screw to move relative to the panel when the panel is compressed in the vicinity, thereby preventing the screw head from penetrating an overlying membrane. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A screw threaded fastener and fastened assembly
This invention relates to screw threaded fasteners generally and in particular to fasteners which are used to attach articles to thin sheet metal. Fastening material such as rigid insulation and plaster board to steel studs in the construction of a building is an example of an environment where the present invention is useful.
The attachment of material such as rigid insulating and plaster board, to steel studs has previously been accomplished with screws or various types.
In many instances it is desirable to minimise damage to these materials as the head of the screw is seated. It is also desirable to minimise damage resulting from over-tightening or from slippage of a driving bit out of the driving recess of the fastener. Efforts to accomplish these ends have involved the use of specially designed screw heads and the use of screw driving tools with automatic torque limit clutches.
According to a first aspect of this invention a screw-threaded fastener for attaching an article of predetermined thickness to sheet metal includes a head, a generally cylindrical elongate shank, helical threads on the shank, and at least one annular unthreaded portion of limited axial extent on the shank, the portion being located on the shank at a predetermined distance from the head, the distance corresponding to the predetermined thickness of the article, so that, when the head of the fastener is seated, the fastener is free to rotate without continued advancement.
According to a second aspect of this invention a screw-threaded fastener for attaching articles of a variety of predetermined thicknesses to sheet metal includes a head at one end, a generally cylindrical elongate shank, a tip at the other end, a plurality of discrete threaded sections on the shank, and a plurality of annular unthreaded shank portions adjacent each of the thread sections, the annular unthreaded shank portions being spaced from the head at predetermined distances, the predetermined distances corresponding to the predetermined thicknesses of articles to be fastened, so that, when the head of the fastener is seated, the fastener is free to rotate without continued advancement.
The present invention also includes a fastened assembly including a fastener in accordance with the first or second aspect.
Fasteners accordance with this invention are used for attaching material of predetermined thickness to sheet metal with minimum damage to the material. An embodiment in accordance with the invention provides a fastener which may be used to fasten material of a variety of predetermined thickness. An advantage of a fastener in accordance with this invention is that it can be driven without requiring the use of a clutch-type screw driving gun.
Various embodiments of fasteners and fastened assemblies in accordance with this invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings; in which: Figure 1 is a partly sectioned side elevation of a first embodiment;
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are all partly sectioned side elevations of a second embodiment showing how it is used to fasten articles of different thicknesses;
Figure 5 is a partly sectioned side elevation of the second embodiment during installation; and
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a third embodiment.
Referring to the drawings in which similar parts are designated by the same numerals, a screw 10 has a head 1 2 with driving recess 14. The fastener has a shank 1 6 with threads 1 8. In the preferred embodiment the fastener 10 has a drilling tip 22.
The threads 18 are interrupted by unthreaded portions 24 forming a plurality of threaded sections 26. Threaded sections 26 are numbered consecutively 26a, 26b, etc., starting at the section closest to the tip 22. An article 28 is fastened to thin sheet metal 30. In the preferred embodiment the fastener includes an annular ring 32.
Fig. 1 shows a screw 10 in accordance with the present invention attaching an article 28 to a steel sheet metal stud. As the drilling tip 22 penetrates the sheet metal 30 an opening 31 is formed therein. The threads 1 8 on the first threaded section 26a engage the sheet metal 30. The unthreaded portion 24 adjacent the threaded sections 26a and 26b is located on the shank 1 6 such that when the head 12 of the screw is properly seated with respect to the article 28, the threads 18 no longer advance the screw through the sheet metal 30. Thus, there is no danger of over tightening the screw. Also, the possibility of a driving bit "walking" or "climbing" out of the recess 14 is greatly lessened because there is reduced resistance to rotation. The resistance to penetration provided by the head 1 2 of the fastener is sufficient to prevent continued advancement of the screw. And, the threads 1 8 on the threaded section 26a provide resistance to pull out forces exerted on the screw 10 or the article 28.
An important feature of a screw embodying the present invention is the resistance to loosening caused by vibration. The opening 31 formed in the sheet metal 30 may assume a helical configuration or if the screw has a thread cutting feature the opening may be planar but noncircular. There is reduced resistance to rotation when the screw is fully driven due to the unthreaded portions 24 of the screw. Thus, the screw will generally be rotated beyond the point where threaded engagement exists. In order to loosen, a screw must first be moved to the point where the threads can fit through the opening.
Since, there is only one position which will allow the screw to begin to disengage and since it is very unlikely that the screw will find that position, the resistance to loosening due to vibration will be improved with the present invention.
Figs.2,3 and 4 illustrate that a single screw can be used with articles of varying predetermined thicknesses. In many situations, insulation material at different thicknesses are used at a single jobsite. An alternative embodiment of the present invention includes a plurality of unthreaded portions 24, and corresponding plurality of threaded sections 26. Fig. 2 shows the fastener 10 attaching an article 28 of relatively large thickness. Figs. 3 and 4 show that the same fastener could be used to attach articles of lesser thickness.
Fig. 5 shows that, without the resistance to penetration provided by the interaction of the head 12 and the article 28, continued penetration of the fastener can be accomplished by a slight application of axial force together with continued rotation of the fastener. Because insulation materials and plaster board are made to fairly exacting tolerances, a single screw of the present invention can accommodate a variety of thicknesses. The distance between the head 1 2 and the various unthreaded portions 24 can be made to correspond to the thicknesses of material most commonly used, such as 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" or 1",(9,12,i8or2Smm).
The annular ring 32 serves as a secondary positive limit to prevent inadvertent excessive penetration when the fastener is used with the thinnest of articles. The ring 32 is separated from the uppermost threaded section by an unthreaded portion 24. As the ring 32 abuts the sheet metal 30 the fastener is free to rotate without further advancement.
It should be understood that it may be desirable to increase the root or crest diameter or both root and crest diameter of succeeding threaded portions. The use of a fastener of the present invention with thinner panels may cause the opening 31 to expand as succeeding threaded section 26 is forced into re-engagement with the sheet metal 30. To compensate for this expansion it may be necessary to make succeeding threaded sections 26 larger, i.e., increasing from tip 22 to head 12. Also, it may be desirable to make the unthreaded portions 26 of a diameter less than adjacent root diameters.
The length of the unthreaded shank portion will preferably coincide with the thickness of the sheet
metal to which the article is attached, and will
therefore be of limited axial extent. The threads
above and below the unthreaded portion will
prevent displacement of the screw in either axial directions unless the screw is rotated. The extent
of the unthreaded portion may be greater than the thickness of the sheet to which the article is
attached, especially if the screw is used with rigid
insulation. When used with rigid material, a screw
of the present invention will not advance beyond the unthreaded portion when the head of the
screw contacts the materials being fastened,
because the rigid material will be able to
withstand forces tending to make the head of the
screw penetrate beyond the surface of the
material.
The screw shown in Fig. 6 has multiple unthreaded portions 24 with diameters which increase from tip to head. The unthreaded portions are of greater axial extent than the thickness of the sheet material. An extended unthreaded portion 24 will cause the screw to rapidly advance through the sheet metal. The rapid advancement will create an impact which will facilitate the penetration of the larger succeeding threaded sections through the sheet metal.
In the alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 6, the greater axial extent of unthreaded portions 24
has an additional desirable function in some
applications. When used to fasten compressible
roofing insulation to a metal deck, for example, the
unthreaded portion 24 will allow the screw to
deflect downward relative to the deck without damaging roofing material which has been
installed over the head of the screw.
The provision for downward movement of the screw eliminates the possibility that the head of the screw will poke through a roofing membrane when insulation near the screw is compressed.
