Abstract

A double-walled drinking cup for sale to airline passengers consists of an inner component with a picture of a landscape and an outer transparent component with a picture of an aircraft, which two components are capable of relative rotational, but not relative axial, movement so that the aircraft appears to move in relation to the landscape. Alternatively the receptacle may be a food container or the walls thereof may carry slide rule markings. Reference is also made to the application of the invention to a game or calculating instrument. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cup or food container This invention relates to a double-walled cup or other food container, and one object is to provide a construction leading to a particularly interesting and pleasing appearance.
Heat insulating double-walled drinking cups are known in which inner and outer cup members, thermo-formed from sheet plastics material are nested together, and according to the present invention in a double-walled cup or food container the walls are figures of revolution about an axis and are constituted by two nested components which are relatively rotatable around the said axis; the outer component is transparent or translucent; and both components carry decorative or other markings which move relatively to each other during such rotation.
In one embodiment an aircraft or other vehicle is depicted on the outer component which is transparent and a pictorial landscape background or a diagrammatic showing of an airline route or a railway route is depicted on the inner component so that during relative rotation the vehicle appears to move in relation to the background or along the map.
In another embodiment the two slides of a conventional slide rule are depicted so that the slide rule can operate by rotating the two components.
The invention may be carried into practice in various ways, and one embodiment will be briefly described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, of which the single figure shows a double-walled drinking cup.
The cup is vacuum formed from sheet polystyrene in a conventional manner by forming inner and outer cup components decorating them and nesting them together. After nesting they may be secured together for example, by curling over the upper rim so that the cups have substantially no freedom of axial movement but freedom for relative rotational movement about the cup axis.
The containers will be generally of frusto-conical form or will otherwise be figures of revolution.
Apart from the method of securing the cups together to permit such relative rotation, the construction of the cups may be in accordance with various previous proposals, but in accordance with the invention the inner container is decorated with a background of a pictorial landscape, while the outer component which is transparent is decorated either by being printed on, or by carrying a transfer with the device of an aeroplane.
As the two components are rotated in relation to each other it will appear as if the aeroplane is moving on the landscape. The container is intended for carrying drinks bought by airline passengers. The background instead of being a landscape, could be a diagrammatic showing of the route being followed.
If the cup was for use for railway passengers, the vehicle on the outer container would be a locomotive and the background could be a map of the route being followed.
Other possibilities are components of a game or components of a calculating instrument or something like that.
The cup can be cheaply made and can be of great interest to the purchaser.
The invention is not limited to drinking cups but could for example cover food containers generally provided the two components are formed as figures of revolution.
1. A double-walled container of which the walls are figures of revolution about an axis and are constituted by two nested components which are relatively rotatable about that axis, the outer component is transparent or translucent, and both components carry decorative or other markings which move relatively to each other during such rotation.
2. A container as claimed in Claim 1 constituting a drinking cup.
3. A container as claimed in either of the preceding claims in which the marking on the outer component is a picture of an aircraft or other vehicle, while the marking on the inner component is a picture of a landscape background or a diagram of a route.
4. A container as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the respective markings on the inner and outer components are components of a game or of a calculating instrument.
5. A container as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which one of the components is formed with parts constituting bearings for locating the other component during relative rotation.
6. A container as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the components have substantially no freedom of relative axial movement.
7. A container as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the two components are of generally frusto-conical form.
8. A container as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the two components are secured together by curling over the upper rim of at least the inner component.
9. A double-walled drinking cup constructed and arranged substantially as herein specifically described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
