Abstract
A harvesting knife (10) has a first blade (11) secured to a blade holder (13) fixed for movement with a cylinder (16) of a hydraulic ram. To piston (30) of the hydraulic is secured a second blade assembly (20) and extension of the hydraulic ram urges together the first blade (11) and the second knife assembly (20) to perform a cutting operation. A spring (31) separates the blades when a cutting operation is complete. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in harvesting and pruning knives
The invention relates to harvesting knives.
According to the invention there is provided a
harvesting knife comprising first and second mutually facing knife assemblies, arranged for sliding move
mentthe one relative to the other, and power means for causing the knife assemblies to perform a cutting stroke by moving the knife assemblies between a first
position in which the knife assemblies are spaced
apart and a second position in which the two knife assemblies engage the one with the other.
Means are preferably provided for biasing the knife assemblies towards the first position. The biasing means may comprise a spring.
Thefirst knife assembly may comprise a knife having an inwardly curved cutting edge.
The second knife assembly may comprise a pair of parallel blades each having a generally outwardly curved working edge. The working edge of each blade ofthe second knife assembly may be serrated and may comprise a plurality of spikes extending towards the first knife assembly.
The knife assemblies are preferably slidable linearly the one relative to the other.
The power means preferably comprise a hydraulic ram, one portion ofthe hydraulic ram being secured to thefirstknife assembly and a second part of the hydraulic ram being secured to the second knife assembly, the arrangement being such that extension of the hydraulic ram urgestogetherthetwo knife assemblies.
The hydraulic ram is preferably adapted to be attached to rotary power means, for example a hand rotary hydraulic engine.
By way of example, one embodiment of the harvesting knife according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. is is a sideview of a harvesting knife; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the harvesting knife of Fig 1; and
Fig. 3 is an exploded view offirst and second knife assemblies ofthe harvesting knife.
A harvesting knife generally indicated at 10 has a first knife blade 11 of steel having a knife edge 12 generally inwardly curved. The blade 11 is secured to a steel blade holder 13, the blade holder 13 in turn being secured bynutand bolt assemblies 14to a plate 15 attached to a cylinder 16 of a hydraulic ram.
Asecond knife assembly 20 has a pair of parallel, spaced apart, serrated blades 21,22 of steel. Between the blades 21 and 22 are arranged a steel spacer 23: and guide bars 24 and 25. The second knife assembly is held together by nuts 26 and bolts 27.
The guide bars 24 and 25 provide a guide slot 28 through which the blade holder 13 slides.
The spacer 23 is secured by welding or other suitable means to a piston 30 ofthe hydraulic ram.
Figs. 1 and 2 show the harvesting knife 10 in a first position in which the two blade assemblies are spaced apart ready to receive an article, such as a palm to be harvested, between the two knife assemblies. A tension spring 31 attached at one end to a bolt 27 ofthe second knife assernbly and at the other wend to a mounting 32 on the plate 15 to which the blade holder 13forthefirst knife 11 is attached.
When hydraulic fluid is introduced into the hydraulic ram, the piston 30 is urged out of the cylinder 16, thereby urging the second knife assembly 20 towards the knife edge 12 of the first knife 11. In addition to serrations, the blades 21 and 22 have spikes 35 which bite into material ofthe article to be cut, thereby achieving a grip on the article. The ram continues to extend until the blade 11 passes between the two blades 21 and 22, at which point hydraulic pressure in the cylinder 16 is released through an outlet valve 40.
Atthis point, the spring 31 returns the blades 21 and 22 to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Hydraulic fluid under pressure forthe hydraulic ram may conveniently be provided by attaching the ram to a hand rotaryhydraulic engine (notshown), a typical engine size being 24 c.c. The end of the ram is attached to the hydraulicfluid under pressure is introduced into the cylinder 16 of the ram.
It will be appreciated that while the term "harvesting knife" has been used throughout this specification, the knives according tothe invention could be used for other purposes, such as pruning.
