Abstract

A pruner comprises a shaft 2 and a sliding knife 4. The material to be cut is held in notch 6. On the other end of the shaft 2 is a trigger 3 to operate the knife. Notch 6 holds the material firm to make a clean cut.

Description

-I- SLIDING KNIFE PRUNER This invention relates to a sliding knife pruner.
2305881 There are available various typesof pruning devices which are usually called secateurs. They use a scissor action for cutting and the blades are of various shapes, some use one blade cutting against an anvil. The cuts which these secateurs make are not clean, this gives disease the chance to attack the material which is being cut.
According to the present invention there is provided a pruning device which uses a sliding knife 4 on the drawing. The leading edge of the knife blade is ground to an angle 8, this cuts with a slashing action which makes a clean cut which helps to prevent diseases entering the wound. The knife 4 is activated by squeezing trigger 3. The pruner can be used by disabled people or those with poor eyesight, even from a wheelchair. This is made possible as the cutting end 7 of the pruner attaches itself to the twigs being cut, for when the twig drops into the gap 6 it is held fast until severed by squeezing the trigger 3. The shaft 2 can be any length to reach hanging baskets or up trees. The cutting mechanism is on the far end away from the trigger, this keeps the operators hand away from the briars. When pruning trees or hanging baskets it is possible to poke the cutting head 7 into the branches and pull it slowly back until the twig to be cut falls into the gap in the cutting head. The severed flowers or twigs can then be picked up for disposal by trapping them in the gap 6 with only a slight pressure on trigger 3.
1. A sliding knife pruner.
2. A sliding knife pruner wherein the material to be cut is held in a notch.
3 A sliding knife pruner as claimed in 1 and 2 wherein a knife is activated by squeezing a trigger.
4. A sliding knife pruner as claimed in 1, 2 and 3 wherein the leading edge of the knife blade 4 is ground to an angle.
A sliding knife pruner as claims 1, 2, 3 and 4 wherein it can be used to pick up severed material for disposal.
6. A sliding knife pruner as claims 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in which the cutting mechanism is on the end of a shaft, this keeps the operators hand away from briars.
