Abstract

Lining material (5) is attached to an article (G) such as a suitcase, by securing to the lining (5) part (2) of a two-part coupling assembly, securing to the article (G) the other part (1) of the coupling assembly and connecting together the parts of the coupling assembly so as to interconnect the lining (5) and the article (G). The coupling is a snap-fit with tab (B) being forced past resilient arms (3), (4) into aperture (A). The parts (1) and (2) are attached by sewing with flange (C) and guiding recess (F) to assist in this, and locating lip (D) to assist in accurate positioning. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method and device for lining articles This invention relates to methods and devices for attaching linings, such as linings made out of soft fabrics, to suitcases, soft furnishings and other articles.
Previously linings have been attached to suitcases and other articles by stapling, riveting and glueing. Such methods do not securely attach the lining to the article and the appearance of the article so lined is often not particularly attractive.
Furthermore such methods result in a lining which cannot easily be cleaned nor repaired.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of attaching lining material to an article, such as a suitcase or item of soft furnishing, the method comprising securing to one of the lining and the article one part of a two-part coupling assembly, securing to the other of the lining and the article the other part of the coupling assembly and connecting together the parts of the coupling assembly so as to interconnect the lining and the article.
Preferably the coupling assembly can also be disconnected so that the lining can be removed from the article, for instance, for cleaning purposes or to effect repairs either to the lining or to the article, or in order to replace the lining with afresh lining.
The present invention also provides a coupling assembly for connecting together lining material and an article, such as a suitcase or item of soft furnishing, the coupling assembly comprising a first part connectable to the lining material and a second part connectable to the article, the two parts of the coupling assembly being connectable together so as to interconnect the lining and the article.
Preferably the parts of the coupling assembly are each a plastics extrusion, one of which is provided with a male portion for mating with a corresponding female portion provided in the other part. Preferably each part is provided with means whereby the part may be sewn or otherwise connected to the appropriate one of the lining and the article. Preferably the male and female portions of the parts are so shaped that the parts may be press-fitted together and may be relatively easily pulled apart.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a device for attaching lining material to a suitcase.
Referring to the drawing, a device in accordance with the present invention comprises two plastics extrusions 1 and 2. Extrusion 1 is provided with an aperture A, entrance to which is between two arms 3 and 4, the gap between them being enlargeable due to the flexible nature of these arms. Extrusion 1 is provided with adjacent and running parallel to its lower edge a recessed stitching guide or channel F by means of which the extrusion may be sewn onto the side of frame G of a suitcase. Extending from the opposite side of extrusion 1 is a siting lip D which may be positioned so that it rests on the top surface of frameside G and enables the extrusion to be accurately positioned ready for sewing to the frame side. Above siting lip D the extrusion is provided with a ribbed edge E.
Extrusion 2 comprises a strip or length C which may be sewn to the edge of lining 5 so that lining 5 at its upper edge abuts or lies close to a turned over portion 6 of extrusion 2. Integral with turned over portion 6 of extrusion 2 is male locating tap portion 7 which extends parallel to and is spaced from length C.
In order to connect together lining 5 and frame side G of the suitcase, extrusion 2 is located so that tab B abuts arms 3 and 4 of extrusion 1.
Pressure is then applied to extrusion 2 in a direction towards aperture A so that tab B pushes the side arms 3 and 4 and enters aperture A. The arms 3 and 4 then return to their original positions due to their resilience and the result is a secure connection between the extrusions 1 and 2.
If and when desired, the lining can be relatively easily removed from the suitcase by applying a force between extrusions 1 and 2 in a direction such that tab B forces aside arms 3 and 4 and moves out of aperture A.
1. A coupling assembly for connecting together lining material and an article, the coupling assembly comprising a first part connectable to the lining material and a second part connectable to the article, the two parts of the coupling assembly being connectable together so as to interconnect the lining and the article.
2. A coupling assembly according to claim 1, in which each part of the coupling assembly is a plastic extrusion, one of which is provided with a male portion for mating with a corresponding female portion provided in the other part.
3. A coupling assembly according to claim 2, in which the male and female portions of the parts are so shaped that the parts may be press-fitted together and may be relatively easily pulled apart.
4. A coupling assembly according to claim 3, in which each part is provided with means whereby the part may be sewn or otherwise connected to the appropriate one of the lining and the article.
5. A method of attaching lining material to an article, comprising securing to the lining one part of a two-part coupling assembly, securing to the article the other part of the coupling assembly; and connecting together the parts of the coupling assembly so as to interconnect the lining and the article.
6. A method according to claim 1, in which the coupling assembly may also be disconnected so that the lining can be removed from the article.
7. A method according to claim 5 or 6, in which the coupling assembly is in accordance with any one of claims 1 to 4.
8. A method according to any one of claims 5 to 7, in which the article to be lined is a suitcase.
