Abstract

A telescopic rod which may be securely fastened between two surfaces comprises telescoping members 1 and 2. The ends of the rod members are equipped with rotatable discs 4 and 5 and at least one of which 5 is secured to the rod 1, 2 by means of a screw 6 in such a manner that a relative turning movement between rod 1, 2 and screw 6 will longitudinally displace the disc in relation to the rod. The rod 1, 2 is equipped with a ratchet mechanism 11, 12 which prevents a secured rod from being unscrewed. Outer surfaces of the discs 4, 5 are covered with a relatively soft material 9, 10. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Rod to be secured between two surfaces This invention concerns a telescopic rod which is intended to be secured between two surfaces.
Such a rod is in the prior usually secured between two rigid surfaces by adjusting the length of the rod to the distance between the two surfaces. The rod is thereafter secured to either surface by embedding the rod end within the surface or by welding it thereto. Alternatively, the rod ends may be equipped with flanges which are then secured to the surfaces by means of screws.
Rods secured by means described above are often difficult to remove, and when removed invariably leave unsightly marks, such as for example screw holes, where previously secured.
Another disadvantage is that the rod may subsequently only be used between surfaces where the distance is equal to or less than the original rod length.
The purpose of this invention it to provide a telescopic rod which may be easily secured between two surfaces, and which may be removed without leaving unsightly marks.
This purpose is achieved according to the invention by the provision of a telescopic rod to be secured between two surfaces, comprising telescopic members and a rotatable disc at the outer ends of the rod, at least one of the rotatable discs being secured to the rod by means of a screw so that the position of the disc in relation to rod may be altered longitudinally, a ratchet mechanism fitted to the rod for preventing a secured rod from becoming unscrewed, and a locking screw fitted to the rod which screw also serves as a leverage point when the rod is to be fastened.
Preferred embodiments of a rod of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, in which :- Figure 1 is an elevational view of one embodiment of a telescopic rod, and Figure 2 is an elevational view of a second embodiment.
In the drawings, numerals 1 and 2 indicate telescopic rod members which may be secured to each other by means of a locking screw 3. Rod members 1 and 2 are at opposing ends fitted with rotatable discs 4 and 5. Disc 5 is secured to rod member 2 by means of a screw 6 and a nut 7 which is weided into rod member 2. A locking nut 8 is provided and coverings 9 and 10 of a relatively soft material are applied to the surfaces of discs 4 and 5. The rod 1, 2 is equipped with a ratchet mechanism 11, 12 and by screwing the threaded part 13 of a screw 14 fully through a nut 1 5 before it enters ratchet mechanism 11,12 the disc 4 may not unintentionally be divorced from rod member 1. The nut 1 5 is welded into rod member 1.Since discs 4 and 5 are removable different kinds of end fittings may be attached to rod members 1 and 2.
The rod may for example be fitted between a floor and ceiling as follows: Disc 5 is screwed into rod member 2. Locking screw 3 is released and the rod 1, 2 is extended or retracted until it touches the floor and ceiling surfaces. Rod members 1 and 2 are then interlocked by means of locking screw 3. The rod 1, 2 is then turned around its longitudinal axis using the head of screw 3 as a point of leverage, until sufficient pressure to safely secure the rod is exerted by disc 5 being unscrewed from rod 2.
Discs 4 and 5 will not turn as rod 1, 2 is turned around its longitudinal axis due to the friction between the soft material 9, 10 and the surfaces against which the rod is secured. Once secured, the rod cannot be unscrewed since it is equipped with the ratchet mechanism 11, 1 2. The rod may be finally secured by means of locking nut 8. The rod is removed by unscrewing the locking screw 3 and telescoping rod member 2 into rod member 1.
In the event that rod 1, 2 is to be secured between two non-parallel surfaces, disc 5 may be secured to screw 6 by means of a hinge, and disc 5 may of course be secured to the surface by means of screws or by some other method.
in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 2, the upper portion of rod member 1 containing locking screw 3 is separate from the lower portion of rod member 1 The upper portion of rod member 1 then becomes a locking ring, and the lower part of said upper portion and the upper part of the lower portion of rod member 1 may be shaped so as to form the ratchet mechanism 11,12.
In a further embodiment of the invention, discs 4, 5 may be secured to opposing ends of rod members 1 and 2 in the same manner as disc 5 is secured to rod member 2 in the above embodiments but whereas one screw 6 has a left hand thread the other has a right hand thread.
When the rod 1, 2 is turned around its longitudinal axis both discs 4 and 5 will be displaced in relation to the rod 1, 2. When the rod 1, 2 is secured, it may be locked by means of locking nuts 8.
A rod as provided by the invention may be easily secured between two rigid surfaces, and leaves no marks when removed. There is a vast number of potential applications for rod 1, 2. It may be used for elderly or infirm people to support their getting up from a chair, as a support in bathrooms and toilets, as a wardrobe rod, and numerous other purposes.
1. A telescopic rod to be secured between two surfaces, comprising telescopic members and a rotatable disc at the outer ends of the rod, at least one of the rotatable discs being secured to the rod by means of a screw so that the position of the disc in relation to rod may be altered longitudinally, a ratchet mechanism fitted to the rod for preventing a secured rod from becoming unscrewed, and a locking screw fitted to the rod which screw also serves as a leverage point when the rod is to be fastened.
2. A telescopic rod as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the outer surfaces of the rotatable discs
