Description

SPECIFICATION Combined carton and supporting pallet This invention relates to a combined carton and supporting pallet, both of which prior to assembly can be stacked flat for ease of transportation.

According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a combined rectangular prismatic carton and supporting pallettherefor, both the carton and the pallet being formed from a separate blank of stifffoldable sheet material, the carton blank comprising two opposed pairs of side walls and at leasttwo opposed flaps in its base and the pallet blank comprising a base of substantially the same size and form as that of the carton when formed from said carton blank, said pallet base having along each one of a pair of opposed edges an insertion flap and along each one of the other pair of opposed edges a box foot, the said insertion flaps oftheformed pallet being tucked into edge openings of the carton base defined bythe said at least two opposed flaps when folded down on to the edges of the carton walls.

According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a blankfora palletto be used in the combination above, said blank having a base of the form and size ofthe carton base and having on each of one opposed pair of base edges foldable insertion flaps and on each ofthe other opposed pair of base edges flaps of rectangularform having four spaced score lines all parallel to the said other base edges to allow an open box structure to be erected therefrom and held secured to said basetoform boxfeet.

The invention will be more fully understood from the following description given byway ofexample only with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawings in which: Figure lisa side elevation of a blankof stiff foldable sheet material such as corrugated paper board from whichthecarton is formed; Figure 2is a plan view a a ofa blankofstifffoldable sheet material such as corrugated paper board from which the pallet is formed.

In both Figure 1 and Figure 2 score or crease lines are shown in chain dotted lines.

Figure 3 is a view in oblique perspective of the pallet partly assembled ready for combination with the carton which is shown assembled in Figure 4A.

Figures 4A, 4B, 4C1, 4C2 areviews all in oblique perspective showing the sequential steps of combining the carton and pallet; and Figure 5 is a partviewto a lightly larger scale than that used in the previous figures to show one alternative manner of giving stability to the pallet box feet.

The carton isfolded in conventional mannerfrom the blank of Figure 1 to form a rectangular prism as shown in Figure 4A. Sides S1, S2, S3, S4 being held by extension E1 preferably stitched or glued into position.

Top and base flaps fTa, fT2, fT3, fT4; fB1, fB2, fB3, fB4 are arranged to meet as shown in Figures 4A and 4c2.

In Figure 1 there is shown a carton having a long side wall of width1/, and a short side wall of width1/2 with aflap length 12/2.The pallet of Figure2 in orderto conform with the carton has a rectangular base B having sides oft and/2 with opposed insertion flaps F1, F2 having a length slightly less than 12/2.

The pallet blank of Figure 2 is shown partly assembled in Figure 3, rectangular prismatic box feet B1, B2 being formed by folding flaps F3, F4 respectively along parallel spaced apart score lines and stapling their extension extremities E3, E4 as shown ate3, e4.

It is to be noted that insertion flaps F1, F2 are tapered and have a plurality of score lines close to their hinge line to facilitate folding as will be made more clear in the description below.

Consider now Figures 4Ato 4C2 inclusive.

In Figure4Athe carton is placed upside-down with its base flaps f51454folded as shown to allowforthe insertion offlap F1 ofthe partly assembled pallet. With Fa underf52,f54and on top of fB3, (Figure 4B) the pallet is rabated arrowXtoform a secure base and insertion flap F2 is then tucked in, by virtue of the above noted plurality of score lines, on top of fBi and under fB2-B4 The pallet and carton are now combined as shown in Figure 4cl.The carton/pallet combination of Figure 4ci is now inverted as shown in Figure 4C2 50 that the combination stands onthe pallet boxfeet; the pallet box feet having previously been strengthened by the insertion of close fitting rectangular prismatic members M1, M2, in the direction of arrow XX X2.

Alternatively the pallet box feet may be given some rigidity by the insertion offlap pieces of board M3, M4 tightly fitting along the diagonals of each box foot end and oriented as shown in Figure 5.

A fork liftshown generally at L1 (Figure 4c2) may now be inserted as shown by arrow X3 to liftthe carton/pallet combination. Clearly any suitable num ber ofsimilar cartons without pallets may be stacked onto the base carton/pallet combination. If the load is such as to require it, a further box foot B3 or box feet B4 BE (not shown) may be glued, stitched or stapled to the underside of the carton between box feet B1 and B2.

When the strengthening members M1, M2 or M3, M4 are removed the assembled pallet shown in Figure 3 may be collapsed into a substantially flat form. The carton also may be folded flat so that both carton and pallet can then be transported without taking-up unnecessary space.

It is to be understood that a cubic carton may be used with equal facility to that ofthe rectangular prismatic carton of disparate lengthsNlX,il2. In the latter its base flaps fB2, fs4 are shown on top in Figure 4A, if, however, the flaps are so folded that fB" fB3 are on top then the pallet insertion flap F1 would have to enter not at f53 along arrow X4 as shown but along eitherthe edge of fB2 or fB4 as shown by dotted arrows X4, X5 the pallet base size being arranged to conform mutatis mutandis.

It is also to be understood that the contents of the carton assist in keeping the pallet held to the carton by virtue of its weight and bulk pressing downward on to the assembled flaps Fa F2; fB1 < fB4 Further, retaining straps (not shown) may be passed between the said supporting members around the combinationto securethe contents and the pallet.

Claims

1. A combined rectangular prismatic carton and supporting pallettherefor, both the carton and the pallet being formed from a separate blankofstiff foldable sheet material, the carton blankcomprising two opposed pairs of side walls and at leasttwo opposed flaps in its base and the pallet blank comprising a base of substantially the same size and form as that ofthe carton when formed from said carton blank, said pallet base having along each one of a pair of opposed edges an insertion flap and along each one of the other pair of opposed edges a box foot, the said insertion flaps oftheformed pallet being tucked into edge openings ofthe carton base defined bythesaid at least two opposed flapswhen folded down onto the edges of the carton walls.

2. The combined carton and supporting pallet as claimed in claim 1 wherein the carton has two pairs of opposed flaps in its base.

3. The combined carton and supporting pallet as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the carton is of cubicform.

4. The combined carton and supporting pallet as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the base flap length 12/2 ofthe carton is substantially one half that ofthe width ofthe short side.

5. The combined carton and supporting pallet as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the pallet box feet are given rigidity by means of inserted strip members along the diagonals.

A blank, for a pallet to be used in the combined carton and supporting pallet of any preceding claim, said blank having a base ofthe form and size of the carton base and having on each of one opposed pair of base edges foldable insertion flaps and on each of the other opposed pair of base edges flaps of rectangular form having four spaced score lines all parallel to the said other base edges to allow an open box structure to be erected therefrom and held secured to said base to form boxfeet.

7. A blank according to claim 6 constructed and arranged substantially as herein before described and asshownin Figure2oftheaccompanying drawings.

8. A palletfor use in the combined carton and supporting pallet as claimed in claims 1 to 5 constructed and arranged substantially as herein before described and as shown in Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.

9. A combined carton and supporting pallet constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described and as shown in the several figures ofthe accompanying drawings.
