Abstract

The dispenser comprises a carton (35) having a cut-out (34) formed in a front wall (2) and a lid (11) provided with a closure flap (30). The flap (30) lies behind the cut-out (34) and parallel to the front wall (2) when the lid (11) is closed. A continuous roll (36) of cigarette paper is housed within the carton (35) with its free end disposed between the front wall (2) and the closure flap (30) and visible through the cut-out (34). The paper is advanced to project from the carton (35) through the slit (39) between the front wall (2) and the lid (11) by engaging the paper with the thumb through the cut-out (34) and exerting a pushing force on the paper. When the length of paper projecting from the carton (35) corresponds to the length of the cigarette required, the projecting strip of paper is torn off along the top edge of the front wall (2). The cigarette paper may carry a longitudinally extending band of adhesive (40). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cigarette paper dispensers This invention relates to cigarette paper dispensers for dispensing strips of paper four use by smokers in hand rolling cigarettes.
Cigarette paper dispensers are conventionally in the form of flat packs made of card and having a longitudinal slotintheirfrontsurface. Each pack contains a plurality of individual papers folded in half and formed into a stack so asto enable the papers to be withdrawn one at a time through the slot. The papers are interleaved so that the action of drawing one paper out of the slot will serve to withdraw a part ofthe next paperthrough the slot, thus enabling the next paperto be withdrawn simply by pulling on the part projecting from the slot. Each paper is provided with an adhesive band along one edge parallel to the slot so thatthe length of the slot will substantially correspond to the length of a cigarette formed from one of the papers.
It is a disadvantage ofthese conventional dispen sers that the length of cigarette which may be rolled from the papers in a pack is determined entirely by the length of the pack and cannot bevaried from one cigarette to another or according to individual preference. Furthermore difficulties can be encountered in withdrawing papers from the slot leading to papers becoming crumpled or preventing further papers being withdrawn from the slot.
According to the invention a cigarette paper dispenser comprises a carton having a cut-outformed in a front wall and a lid provided with a closure flap which lies behind the cut-out and parallel to the front wall when the lid is closed, and a continuous roll of paper housed within the carton with its free end disposed between the front wall and the closure flap and visible through the cut-out so that the paper may be advanced to project from the carton through the slit between the front wall and the lid by engaging the paperthrough the cut-out.
Preferably the roll of paper incorporates an adhesive band running along one edge region of the paper in the direction in which paper is wound on the roll.
Thusthe length of cigaretteto be rolled is determined by the length of paper which is torn offfrom the roll and not by the length ofthe roll. Since the length ofthe roll, and hence also the length of the dispenser, depends on the width of the strips of paper, the dispenser may be made particularly compact. Furthermore the act of dispensing a strip of paper by advancing the paperfrom the slit and tearing offthe projecting strip is particularly reliable and enables the length ofthe strip to be varied at will.
The carton may include two tabs connected to respective end walls of the carton which are turned in underthe lid when the lid is closed so as to lie parallel tothe lid and behind the closureflap. Thetabs are preferably shaped to engage the closure flap along their complete lengths so asto provide optimum supportforthe closure flap.
The carton is conveniently formed from a blank comprising a front-wall-forming panel, a back-wall forming panel, two end-wall-forming panels, a lidforming panel and a bottom-forming panel connected together along fold lines, the closure flap being connected to the lid-forming panel along afurtherfold iine. The bottom-forming panel may also be provided with a closure flap connected thereto along a fold line.
The roll of paper is conveniently wound on a former which may be made of cardboard ora plastics material.
In orderthatthe invention may be more fully understood, a preferred embodiment ofthe invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows a blankforformingthe carton ofthe dispenser; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the dispenser; and Figure 3 is a section taken along the line Ill-Ill in Figure 2.
Referring to Figure 1 the blank 1,which is made of card with a metallic coating on its upper side, comprises a front-wall-forming panel 2 connected to two end-wall-forming panels 3 and 4 along fold lines 5 and 6 and to a bottom-forming panel 7 along a fold line 8. The blank 1 further comprises a back-wall-forming panel 9 connected to the end-wall-forming panel 4, a closure tab 10 and a lid-forming panel 11 respectively alongfold lines 12, 13 and 14.Thebottom-forming panel 7 is provided with a closure flap 15 connected to the panel 7 along a fold line 16terminated by two short slits 1 6A and 16B, and the end-wall-forming panels 3 and 4 are provided with tabs 17 and 18 connected to the panels 3 and 4 along fold lines 19 and 20 and separated from the bottom-forming panel 7 by slits 21 and 22. The tabs 17 and 18 are cut away at 23 and 24. In addition tabs 25 and 26 are connected to the end-wallforming panels 3 and 4 along fold lines 27 and 28, the tab 26 being separated from the lid-forming panel 11 by a slit 29, and a closure flap 30 is connected to the lid-forming panel 11 along a fold line 31. shaped cut-out 34 is formed in the front-wallJorming panel 2.
The blank 1 is erected to form a carton 35 as shown in Figures 2 and 3 by gluing the front surface of the closuretab lotothebackoftheend-wall-forming panel 3 as seen in Figure 1,turning in thetabs 17,18, 25 and 26, and then tucking theclosureflaps 15 and 30 behind the back-wall-forming panel 9 and the frontwall-forming panel 2 respectively. The closure flap 30 on the lid-forming panel 11 will then lie behind the cut-out34,andthetabs 17 and 18will engagewithin the short slits 16and 16B. The erected carton 35 has dimensions of about 41/2 x 21/2 x 21/2 centimetres.
As shown in Figure 2 in broken lines a continuous roll of paper 36 is housed within the carton 35 with its axis coincident with the longitudinal axis ofthe carton. The length of the roll 36 substantially corresponds to the length of the carton and is about 4 centimetres in the example given. The paper, which has an adhesive band 40 running along one longitudinal edge, is wound on toacarboardformer38which has an outer diameter of about 11/2 centimetres. As may be seen most clearly in Figure 3, the free end 37 ofthe roll of paper is passed betweenthefront-wall-forming panel 2 and the closureflap 30 and projects from the carton 35throughtheslit39betweenthetop of the front-wall-forming panel 2 and the lid-forming panel 11.
In orderto dispense a strip of paperfor rolling a cigarette, the carton 35 is held in one hand and the free end 37 ofthe roll of paper is engaged by the thumb of that hand through the cut-out34. The paper is then advanced by exerting a pushing force on the paper with thethumb until a length of paper corresponding to the length of the cigarette which is to be rolled projects from the slit 39.The projecting strip of paper is then grasped between the thumb and the forefinger ofthe other hand and torn along the top edge of the front-wall-forming panel 2, thereby separating the stripfromthe remainderofthe roll of paper.A cigarette maythen be formed in the conventional manner by rolling a quantity of tobacco within the strip ofpaperand wetting the adhesive band 40 prior to completing the rolling operation.
Although the above description is given with reference to one particular example of dispenser it will be appreciated that a number of variations may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, instead of having the dimensions given, the carton may have dimensions of about 61/2 x 21/2 x 2:H2 centimetres or some other dimensions, in which case the roll of paper will have corresponding dimensions.
