Abstract

212,031. Petrie, G., and Petrie & Mc- Naught, Ltd. Jan. 15, 1923. Coating; cleaning.-In a process for sherardizing metals in wire or strip form, the wire &c. is passed eccentrically through an externally heated drum containing zinc dust which is given a rotary or an oscillatory or partial rotary motion. The wire &c. after passing through cleansing baths is passed through a vessel e containing abrasive material such as carborundum or emery powder and then through a tube i, Fig. 5, into which abrasive material from the vessel e enters and which is given an oscillatory or partial rotary motion. The wire &c. passes under electric contacts f , g by which it is heated to a temperature approximating to that of the zinc dust in the sherardizing drum h, wipers l, o, removing any abrasive adhering to the wire &c., the abrasive falling into the drums m, n. The wire &c. is now passed eccentrically through the drum h containing zinc dust fed into the apparatus at 2 and heated bv a muffle r. Overflow of zinc dust is collected in the receptacle 3 similar to the drums m, n, and the sherardized wire is cooled by being passed through a bath of mercury contained in a flat tube 4, Fig. 3, cooled by water in a receptacle 5. The wire &c. before entering the bath may pass over brushes or wipers to remove any surplus zinc dust and an inert gas may be injected into the drum h and tube i to prevent oxidation of the wire or zinc dust.
