Abstract

A body side coupling element being part of a coupling which attaches an ostomy bag to a pad, the latter being normally adhesively attached to the skin of the bag wearer in use, has a lateral flange whose outer portion is angled upwardly away from a pad. It is preferably located at an angle of 15 to 25 degrees to the plane of the coupling element. There is also disclosed an applicator of the "button stick" type which can be inserted between the angled portion of the flange and the pad and held by the user so that the applicator prevents the body side coupling element being pressed into the body of the user when he or she is changing an ostomy bag, so avoiding pain to the user.

Description

SPECIFICATION Coupling element for ostomy bag This invention relates to a body side coupling element for a coupling to attach an ostomy bag to a pad, the latter being normally adhesively attached to the skin of the bag wearer, in use. The invention may be applied to the arrangements described, illustrated, and claimed in any one of British Patents Nos. 1 571 657, 1 583 027, 1 586 823, 1 568 860 and 1 579 875. It may also be applied in the arrangements described, illustrated and claimed in British Patent Applications Nos. 19731 and 82 07172.
The content of each of these patents and applications is hereby incorporated by reference into the present application.
According to the invention, there is provided a body side coupling element having a lateral flange whose outer portion is angled upwardly away from a pad. It is preferably located at an angle of 1 5 to 25 degrees to the plane of the coupling element.
Also, according to the invention there is provided an applicator of the "button stick" type which can be inserted between the angled portion of the flange and the pad and held by the user so that the applicator prevents the body side coupling element being pressed into the body of the user when he or she is changing an ostomy bag.
Embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, Figure 1 being a vertical axial cross section, Figure 2 being a plan view, Figure 3 being a perspective view of the applicator, Figure 4 showing the applicator in use, and Figure 5 being a vertical axial crosssection through an alternative embodiment of the invention, presently preferred.
In Figs. 1-4 of the drawings, 30 shows a pad, e.g. that known in the art under the name Stomahesive (U.K. Registered Trade Mark), 32 shows a body side coupling element 34 its flange, 36 its angled flange portion, 38 a plastics weld seam joining the parts, 40 a stoma aperture, and 42 a preferred embodiment of an applicator.
In use the applicator 42 is inserted between the flange portion 36 and the pad 30 and the user holds it while attaching or detaching an ostomy bag. This substantially prevents the forces applied in attaching or detaching the bag from being applied the very sensitive exposed end of the stoma.
With an appropriately angled and dimensioned flange, a 'button stick' or equivalent may not be needed as the user can hold the rim of the flange with the fingers and thumb of one hand while pulling off or pushing on the bag with the other.
Figure 5 illustrated a presently-preferred design of body side coupling element 60. Thi#s has a circular wall 62 defining a stoma aperture, a flexible sealing strip 64, and a step 66 on the external surface of the wall 62. The latter is integral with an angled flange 68 which extends radially outwardly and (in use) away from the body of the wearer. The angle A may be 15 to 250, preferably about 200, and the thickness of the element (dimension T) may be about 0.140 inch, 3.56 mm. The thickness of the flange, B, may be about 0.045 inch, 1.14 mm. and the length of the flange 68 from its root C to its radially outer tip may be about 0.275 inch, 7 mm.
The wall 62, strip 64, and flange 68 are preferably all integrally moulded from synthetic plastics material, for example nylon.
Claims (Filed on 9th September 1982) 1. A body side coupling element for an ostomy bag coupling and having a lateral flange whose outer portion is angled upwardly away from a pad.
2. An element according to claim 1 in which the outer portion is located at an angle of 15 to 25 degrees to the plane of the coupling element.
3. An applicator of the "button stick" type which can be inserted between the angled portion of a flange and a pad of an ostomy bag coupling and which is constructed to be held by the user so that the applicator prevents the body side coupling element being pressed into the body of the user when he or she is changing an ostomy bag.
4. An ostomy bag coupling including a coupling element according to any preceding
