Abstract

An ostomy device for attaching an open port bag 18 to an adhesive pad 10 which is attached to the user's body. A first ring 12 is fixed to the adhesive pad and protrudes away from the user. The bag is connected to the pad by means of a second ring 22 whose dimensions allow it to fit tightly by pushing on the first ring, thus firmly enclosing the bag between the two rings.

Description

This invention relates to a colostomy, ileostomy or cecostomy , bag and means for securing such a bag to a person who has to wear it as a result of surgery. Such a bag is used to collect body wastes and is herein called an ostomy bag, Such a bag in combination with means whereby it can be secured to the user is herein called an ostomy device.
Many designs of ostomy bag, and many designs of securing means have been proposed, for example those in British Patent Specifications Numbers 975 392, 1 021 145, 1 099 455, 1 212 904 and many others.
However, some of these have not come into practical use, and others have not proved attractive to the users from the points of view of hygiene, secure attachment to the body, comfort, prevention of escape of odours, cheapness, simplicity of construction and operation, and easy and hygienic bag removal and replacement.
According to the present invention, there is provided an ostomy device which includes a bag having an open mouth, an elasticated neok surrounding the mouth, a pad of synthetic plastics adhesive material comprising a blend of a water soluble or water swellable hydrocolloid and a water insoluble, viscous elastic binder, the pad having a first surface intended to adhere in use to the skin of the patient and a second opposed surface from which projects a ring associated with the pad, and a second ring which is a tight push fit over the first ring whereby in use fhe bag can be cla&ped firmly onto the pad by the gripping action of the two rings.
In a preferred version of the invention, the first ring has a radially outwardly extending flange at tir near its end further from the user's body, and the second ring has its radially inner sifrface formed convex in shape, or provided with a bead, so that there is a minimum inside diameter zone of the ring at an axially intermediate region.
This aids the fixing of the first and second rings in their correct relative positions when the device is assembled. The second ring may -246615 also have a radially-extending flange.
The first ring may be secured to the pad by an adhesive, and for this purpose in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the ring may be made integrally with a radially-extending flange which confronts and is adhesively secured to that surface of the pad which faces away from the body of the user. Alternatively the ring may be made integrally with the pad, that is to say, partly embedded in it, or as a yet further alternative the ring may be secured to the pad by welding. The first and second rings are preferably of synthetic plastics material.
The invention will be better understood from the following particular description given with reference to the accompanying drawing of an illustrative and non-limiting embodiment of the invention. The drawing is a vertical axial section through one example of an ostomy device according to the invention.
The device illustrated in the drawing includes a pad 10 of plastics adhesive material comprising a blend of a water soluble or water swellable hydrocolloid and a water insoluble viscous elastic binder. Formed integrally with the pad 10 is a first ring 12 made of a synthetic plastics material. This surrounds a central portion of the pad 10 which in use will be cut or pushed out by the user to provide a central hole 13· The pad has an inner surface 14 which in use engages the skin, with the stoma projecting into the hole. The ring 12 has a radially-extending flange 16 at its end away from the body. The device is shown assembled in the drawing. A bag 18 having a mouth at one end surrounded by an elasticated neck 20 is placed over the projecting part of the ring, a second ring 22 having been threaded onto the bag. To firmly clamp the bag onto the first ring, the second ring is moved towards the bag mouth and slid over the flange 16 of the first ring.
The ring 22 is a tight push fit over the radially outer surface of the ring 12 and the radially inner surface of the ring 22 is formed of -3convex shape as indicated at 24. A snap fit can be achieved by arranging that the axial length of the rings 12 and 22 and the location of the minimum internal diameter portion of the ring 22 is such that it is just on the body side of the flange 16 on the first ring. The second ring is dimensioned to be a relatively tight push fit over the flange 16 when the latter is surrounded by the bag mouth. It will be realised that the simple two-ring arrangement provides a secure gripping action, so lessening the chance of an undesired detachment of the bag, and it has also been unexpectedly found that the arrangement is highly resistant to escape of odours from the bag. The second ring 22 has a radially outwardly extending flange 28 which is provided to give the user a firm surface to grip when applying or removing the bag. The outer edge of the flange may be profiled or roughened to enhance the user's grip on it.
It will be seen that the ostomy device particularly disclosed herein is of simple construction, can readily be used even by the old or infirm, and does not require a special design of bag. Moreover, it has good odour sealing properties.

Claims (10)

1. CLAIMS;1 . An ostomy device as herein defined whioh includes a bag having an open mouth and an elasticated neck surrounding the mouth, and a pad of synthetic plastics adhesive material comprising a blend of a water soluble or water swellable hydro-colloid and a water insoluble, viscous elastic binder, the pad having a first surface intended to adhere in use to the skin of the patient and a second opposed surface from whioh projects a ring associated with the pad, and a second ring which is a tight push fit over the first ring whereby in use the bag can be clamped firmly onto the pad hy the gripping action of the two rings.
2. A device according to Claim 1 in which the first ring has a radially outwardly extending flange at or near its end which in use is further from the user's body, and the second ring has its radially inner surface formed convex in shape or provided with a bead.
3. A device according to Claim 1 or 2 in whioh the second ring has a radially extending flange.
4. A device according to Claim 1, 2 or 3 in which the axial length of the first ring and the location of the minimum internal diameter portion of the second ring are chosen so that when one end of the second ring is in contact with the pad, the said minimum internal diameter portion is located nearer to the pad than to the flange.
5. A device according to any preceding Claim in which the two rings are of a synthetic plastics material.
6. A device according to claim 4 in whioh the first ring is embedded in and hence is effectively integral with the pad.
7. A device according to any of Claims 1 to 4 in which the first ring is welded to the pad. -546615
