Abstract

211,854. Scheding, E., (Assignee of Lindemann, A. B.). Feb. 24, 1923, [Convention date]. Platen machines; gripper mechanism.-In a sheet feeding, carrying, and delivery mechanism for platen machines, of the kind which takes a sheet from a table situated below the platen and conveys it upward for printing and delivery, the gripper bar 4, Fig. 2, and pivoted gripper 5 are carried by elbow levers 37, Figs. 1 and 6, pivoted at 38 to blocks 6 reciprocating along rods 7 pivoted at 8 to the machine frame. Each elbow lever 37 carries a roller 26 which strikes a fixed abutment 27 when the gripper is approaching its lowermost position, whereby the levers are swung against the action of a spring 28 into position to enable the gripper to take a sheet 1 from the table 2. The pivoted gripper 5 is opened at the same time against the action of its spring 32 by the engagement of a stud 35 on arm 39 projecting from the pivoted gripper 5 with a guiding surface 31, which is carried by a lever actuated simultaneously with the front stops 29, so that when the latter are lowered the pivoted gripper 5 closes and grips the sheet. As the blocks 6 are moved upwards along the rods 7 to carry the sheet to printing position the rods 7 are swung towards the type bed by members 9 on the platen. The blocks 6 are reciprocated by a connecting-rod 25 and crank 24 on a wheel 23 actuated by a rack 22 adjustably connected to a slotted arm of a twoarmed lever 20 pivoted on the end of one arm 15 of another two-armed lever, the other arm of which has a roller 16 engaging a cam 13. The other arm of the lever 20 is connected bv a link 21 to a lever 17 carrying a roller 18 held in engagement with another cam 14 by a spring 19. Printing takes place when the parts are in position shown by full lines in Fig. 4, the combined action of the two cams 13, 14 on the lever 20 being such that the grippers 4, 5 are then at rest. The position of this dwell may be varied according to the size of the sheet by adjusting the bolt 36 on the end of the rack 22 in the slot in the lever 20. After printing, the upward movement of the grippers 4, 5 is continued whilst the parts are moved into the positions shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, the pivoted gripper 5 being finally swung open by the engagement of the arm 39 with the hook 33, whereby the sheet is released, transferred to hooks 10 on the platen and carried thereby to the delivery rollers 11 and delivery box 12.
