Abstract

527,374. Printing-machines ; feeding sheets. McCORQUODALE & CO., Ltd., and BATTEY, A. P. April 6, 1939, No. 10860. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] In a machine for applying pigment to sheets which are advanced intermittently to a position beneath a matrix 11, Fig. 1, formed with a series of recesses 12, Fig. 12, supplied with the pigment from receptacles 7 under air pressure and under control of valves 17, the sheets are pressed into contact with the matrix by means of toggles 4 which reciprocate rods 2 carrying the matrix and bring it into contact with the sheet carried by a reciprocating feed table 40 fitted at its front end with grippers 52, Fig. 5, which take the sheet from a rising-and-falling table 37 on which it is registered by front stops 38. The grippers 52 are operated by an oscillating sector 70, Fig. 14, operated by a rising-and-falling bar 73 carried by a pair of levers 74 operated by a link 76, lever 77 and a cam 69, which also operates the table 37 and stops 38. The table 40 and an integral tape feeding device 47 are reciprocated by a sliding rack 55 operated by a reciprocating gear 54 engaging a fixed rack 53, and the table 40 is disconnected from the rack when in position beneath the matrix. The sheet is then held by grippers 167, 168. Fig. 14, on an oscillating arm 161 all operated by lever-and-link mechanism from the cam 69, and as the matrix moves to clamp the sheet against the table 40 the valves 17 are opened by the rising motion of bars 26, Fig. 12, which act on nuts 16 carried by the stems of the valves 17. The bars 26 are raised by bars 27 which. are given a rising-and-falling motion by reciprocating cam bars 30 operated from the cam 69 by oscillating levers 32. On the return motion of the rack 55 the table 40 is again connected thereto, and as the table returns the tapes 47 are driven in a reverse direction so that they remain stationary relatively to the printed sheet and support it in its original position beneath the recesses, 12 so that, if the pigment drips, the drops fall on to the printed parts of the sheet and do not spoil the pattern. While the next sheet is being fed by the grippers 52 the tapes. 47, which . are nowstationary relatively to the table 40, move the printed sheet from printing position, and it is delivered by hand or by delivery mechanism to a pile. The grippers 167, 168 assist in the commencement of the delivery of the sheet, but open soon after the return of the feed table towards printing position commences. The toggles 4 are adjustable by means of screws operated by helical gears 169, 170, Figs. 1 and 15, and a handle 171, and the toggle mechanism is tripped if a sheet fails to be fed to the table 37. A feeler 134 controls a catch 13'7 which normally prevents a spring-tensioned lever 140 from oscillating when permitted by a cam 143. If a sheet is missing the lever 140 oscillates and actuates a trip device which normally prevents the disconnection of a pawl 112 which acts to connect lever arms 109, 111 which reciprocate the link 81 of the toggle mechanism. When the pawl 112 is operated the link 81 is idle. A pedal control is also provided for the trip mechanism. The matrix 11 may be stationary and co-operate with a reciprocating platen and the feeding devices may be varied by replacing the table 40 by gripping devices on endless chains, and suction grippers may replace the mechanical grippers described.
