Abstract
An air filter system in a vehicle ventilation circuit comprises a housing capable of accommodating either one of two alternative filter elements of identical external size, one being a purely mechanical filter element which removes particles from the air and the other being a combined element which removes both particles and gaseous impurities. The first element has in its peripheral a mean aperture which is engaged by a lever actuating an external indicator, to warn the occupants of the vehicle that only the mechanical filter element is in the housing They will then remove the first element and insert the second if the vehicle is to be exposed to gaseous impurities. Elements are clamped into the housing.
Description
SPECIFICATION
A method of providing an air filter for enclosed areas
The invention relates to a method of providing an air filter for purifying air in enclosed areas.
Ventilating devices for passenger vehicles, for example, for tanks, ambulances, command oars, or the like, comprise, together with an air conveying device, an air purifying device. The latter is essentially a filter which comprises a suspended matter filter element, for filtering suspended matter from air, with a gas filter element, for filtering undesired gas from air, connected thereafter. The dust particles which are contained in the air are retained in the suspended matter filter element to the finest suspended material, and then the harmful gases are retained in the gas filter element. An essential problem is the space requirement for the filters which are to be arranged inside the vehicle, and the exchange of used-up filter elements, such as the suspended matter filter element or the gas filter element, for new filter elements.
German Patentschrift No. 1281 267 discloses a know filter for a vehicle which contains, in a common housing, in separate chambers, suspended matter filter and gas filter elements. In orderto insert and interchange the separate elements, there are required in the housing an insertion opening, sealable by means of a flap, and also corresponding filter holding devices to hold each filter element respectively. The filter holding devices must brace the filter elements securely even during the roughest journeys of the vehicle. This known filter design still requires an extensive arrangement with the corresponding space requirement.
It would be convenient to have, therefore, a way of providing a filter for purifying air in enclosed areas, with the possibility of interchanging the suspended matter filter and gas filter elements simply and with a reduced space requirement.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a method of providing an airfilterfor enclosed areas by modifying a filter comprising a housing having an opening and receiving a filter elementforfiltering suspended matter from air, the filter element being clamped in the housing by holding means, the modification comprising removing the filter element from the housing via the opening and replacing it by a second filter element, for removing both suspended matter and undesired gas from air, the second filter element having the same external dimensions as the first-mentioned filter element and being clamped in the housing by the same holding means as clamped the first-mentioned filter element.
The air filter for enclosed areas, for example, in a vehicle ventilating system, may be used under normal environmental conditions as exist, for example, in peacetime, with the suspended matter filter element inserted. The fresh air is then cleansed of the undesirable dust and suspended matter contained in the supply air, which would be harmful to the crew and to the apparatus.
As both the first-mentioned and second filter
elements are of the same external dimensions, the suspended matter-gas filter may be simply exchanged for the suspended matter filter in the case of need.
Thus, it is possible to have a substantially smaller filter housing, with only one insertion opening with a flap, and one filter holding device.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the particular design of the suspended matter filter frame together with a switch arrangement in the filter housing ensures that the actual exchange of the filter elements, in case of need, has occurred, as the presence of the suspended matter filter element in the housing may be indicated externally.
For a better understanding of the invention, and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a cross section of the suspended matter filter;
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the suspended matter filter shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 shows a cross-section of the suspended matter-gas filter;
Figure 4 shows a cutaway portion of the filter housing; and
Figure 5 shows a plan view of the suspended matter filter having been inserted into the housing.
The suspended matter filter 1 of Figure 1 and the combined suspended matter-gas filter 2 of Figure 3 have the same dimensions in respect of length L, width B and height H.
The suspended matter filter f contains a suspended matter filter material 4 tightly inserted in a known manner in a suspended matter filter frame 3.
As shown in Figure 5, the housing 10 is provided with a spring-mounted key lever 6 connected to a switch and indicating apparatus (not shown). The suspended matter filter frame 3 has an opening 5 which engages the key lever 6 when the suspended matter filter 1 has been inserted into the housing.
The opening 5 allows a switching path 5 for the key lever 6. When the switching path 5 has been covered, the key lever triggers a switching process which activates the indicating apparatus to make the suspended matterfilter,which is inserted inthefilter housing 10 for immediate operation, recognizable for the crew.
The combined matter-gas filter 2 comprises, in a known manner in a frame 7, a suspended matter filter material 8 and gas filter material 9 connected thereafter.
The suspended matter filter f or the suspended matter-gas filter 2 is inserted into the filter housing 10, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, and is stretched tightly against a frame 12 by means of mechanical holding devices 11. An insertion opening 13 is sealed in a gas-tight manner by a flap 14. The air to be purified flows through the filter elements in the
