Abstract

A method of preparing decorative glass panels comprising applying to a transparent or translucent glass plate a decorative particulate material, for example anodised aluminium, or other particulate metals, forming an ornamental design in the particulate material using a stream of compressed gas, applying a transparent or translucent binder, such as an acrylic or alkyd resin to the material, and causing the binder to set to fix the particulate material in the desired position.

Description

SPECIFICATION Decorative glass This invention relates to decorative glass, useful in a large number of applications, such as for architectural purposes, internal decorative panels, and glass tiles.
According to the invention, there is provided a method of preparing a decorative glass panel, which method comprises applying to a plate oftransparent or translucent glass a decorative particulate material preferably in dry form, optionally forming an ornamental design in the particulate material, for example using a stream of compressed gas e.g.
compressed air, spraying a liquid transparent or translucent binder onto the particulate material, and causing or allowing the binder material to set to fix the particulate material in the desired position.
The particulate material may comprise any desired decorative material, for example finely ground metallic powder, such as finely ground bronze, copper, brass, or anodised aluminium. Anodised aluminium in particular is available in a very wide range of colours, and thus, using these material alone, a broad range of decorative effects may be obtained. In addition or as an alternative to these metallic materials, finely ground organic materials such as organic pigments or dyes, or natural or synthetic inorganic materials, such as rock crystal, amethyst, rose quartz, yellow quartz, smoky quartz, tourmaline, agate, bloodstone, cornelium, jasper, onyx, sorel, chalcedony. Calcite, Fluorite, granite, granite porphyries, felsites, gnassess, schisto, quartzite, the residue from precious stones, and sand in its variety of colours may be used.
The particulate material may be applied to the glass surface manually or automatically, so as to reproduce the particular design in a reliable manner.
The binder used may be any organic transparent ortransdlucent binder material, for example resins such as acrylic, epoxy, polyurethanes, or polyester resins, cellulose lacquer, or inorganic binders for example sodium silicate. The liquid binder is preferably applied by means of an airless spray so as to cause minimum disruption to the particular material, although, if desired for any particular application, an air-assisted spray or other coating methods such as "curtain coating" may be used. The binder is preferably one which requires stoving to assist setting, and in this case the coated glass is preferably subjected to stoving, in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturers of the binder, after the spray coating operation.
After application of the transparent or translucent binder, a durable backing layer is preferably applied to the coating. This durable backing layer may take the form of a self-adhesive fabric or plastics sheet, but in a preferred embodiment, a durable backing layer is formed by applying a protective coating over the binder layer, for example by spraying, rolling, brushing, or curtain-coating, and allowing the coating to set. In a particularly preferred embodiment, both the binder layer and the protective coating layer are stovable, and the binder layer is allowed to dry but not stoved, before application of the protective coating. Both layers are then stoved together.
The glass substrate is preferably subjected to thorough cleaning before use, for example using a conventional glass cleaning apparatus.
Decorative glass prepared in accordance with the method of the invention may be used as wall tiles, as decorative panels in bathrooms and the like, for table tops, and in various architectural application applications.
A number of preferred embodiments of the invention are shown in the following examples.
Example 1 A glass sheet 20 cm. by 20 cm. was thoroughly cleaned, rinsed with clean water and air dried. A finely divided bronze powder was sprinkled on the upper surface of the glass panel, and distributed evenly using an air spray. Blue anodised aluminium was then springkled onto the panel to form a design.
An acrylic resin was then applied over the bronze and anodised aluminium powders, using an airless spray. The acrylic resin was a stoving acrylic sold under the Trade Mark NEOGENE.
The acrylic resin was allowed to become touch dry, and was then covered with a protective coating of an opaque stoving acrylic paint.
The panel was then held at a temperature of 350"C.
for a period of 7 minutes to stove the binder and coating layer simultaneously.
