Abstract
A system for cooling the engine compartment of a motor scooter or the like, having a body cover 18 defining the engine compartment, comprises the engine driven fan 38, a fan cover 40 extending between the fan and the engine head 30, and a nozzle 46 diverting a portion of the flow induced by the fan into the upper portion of the engine compartment. The cooling airflow thus cools both the engine head 30 and the upper portion of the engine compartment. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Motor scooters and like vehicles
The present invention relates to engine compartment cooling in motor scooters and like vehicles.
Motor scooters and like motorised cycles often include a cover which forms part of the vehicle body and surrounds the engine. Such a body cover makes the vehicle more attractive and appealing for a variety of reasons to many people who are not interested in a true motorcycle. However, such body covers may have a detrimental effect on cooling airflow, both to the engine and to other components. As the engine heats up, the warm air around the engine may simply rise within the engine compartment and become relatively stagnant around a variety of components. With the use of polymeric materials to reduce weight and cost with an increase in efficiency, additional detrimental effects may occur through the deterioration of such component materials.
According to the present invention there is provided a motor scooter or like vehicle having an air-cooled engine in an engine compartment, a fan mounted on the engine and driven thereby, a fan cover arranged to direct cooling air from the fan to the engine head, and a cooling air passage extending out of said fan cover to the upper portion of the engine compartment above the engine.
With such an arrangement a portion of the forced cooling air from the engine fan, rather than being heated by the engine head, is directed into the upper portion of the engine compartment. The air thus directed to the engine compartment forms only a portion of the overall cooling airflow generated by the engine fan.
The diversion of a portion of the cooling air from the engine into the engine compartment prevents stagnation of the air in the compartment.
Thus, components and heat sensitive materials may be maintained at a cooler temperature.
Furthermore, such a system avoids the need for additional vents which might otherwise detract from the appearance of the vehicle, might reduce the effectiveness of the body cover for noise reduction and might increase the amount of heat conducted to the rider, particularly during idling conditions. At the same time, only one fan and forced air system need be provided.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a vehicle according to the present invention, illustrated schematically;
Figure 2 is a detailed cross-sectional elevation taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a transverse cross-sectional elevation illustrating the relevant parts of the vehicle in greater detail.
Referring to the drawings, a motor scooter 10 is illustrated. The motor scooter 10 is only one example of a number of small vehicle types in which the engine is located in an engine compartment defined by a body cover and to which the present invention is applicable. The motor scooter 10 includes wheels 12 and 14, a body 16, a body cover 18 about the rear portion of the motor scooter 10, and a seat 20. A silencer 22, an oil tank 24 and a petrol tank 26 are within the body cover 18.
Also located within the body cover 1 8 is an engine 28. The engine 28 is air-cooled and includes a cylinder head 30 and an exhaust pipe 32 associated with the silencer 22. The engine 28 further includes an extension 34 of its crankshaft which drives auxiliary equipment such as an AC generator 36.
The body cover 18 includes a vent 37 for the exhausting of the engine compartment. The vent 37 is displaced from the seat 20 so that hot air and fumes will not reach the driver. Also, the vent is positioned at the back of the vehicle to enhance forced exhaust when the vehicle is moving. The underside of the body cover 1 8 is also open for venting.
Secured on the crankshaft extension 34 outwardly of the AC generator 36 is a fan 38. The fan 38 is positioned relative to the body cover 1 8 such that it may receive cool air from the outside.
The fan is held on by conventional means and is operative when the engine is on, the fan running at the engine speed.
Surrounding the fan 38 is a fan cover 40. The fan cover 40 has an inlet 42 which louvres 44 facing toward the side of the motor scooter 10.
This placement of the inlet 42 and the louvres helps prevent water, mud and the like from entering into the cooling system. The cover 40 is spaced from the body cover 18 at 45 to minimise flow resistance. The cover 40 extends about the fan 38 for collection of the air flow from the fan 38 for distribution upwardly and toward the engine head 30. The cover 40 is curved toward the head and opens immediately adjacent the head for direct cooling. Arrows in Figure 3 depict the flow both into the fan 38 and upwardly toward the head 30.
The engine fan 38 thus forces a flow of cooling air past the engine head 30. The flow from the engine head 30 is then released from the engine 28 into the engine compartment within the body cover 18. This flow of engine heated air and the natural convection of heat from other portions of the engine may result in the collection of stagnant hot air in the upper portions of the engine compartment in the absence of further provisions now to be described.
A nozzle 46 is positioned on the fan cover 40 so as to extend through the fan cover 40. The nozzle 46 also extends to the upper portion of the engine compartment defined by the body cover 1 8. The nozzle 46 is of sufficiently restricted size so as to direct only a smali portion of the cooling air flow away from the engine 28 and into the engine compartment. Thus, this engine compartment cooling does not detract from the necessary cooling of the engine head 30. As can be seen in Figure 1 by the arrows, the nozzle direction allows forced cooling air to purge the upper portion of the engine compartment.
Thus, a cooling system is disclosed for overcoming certain difficulties associated with a body cover surrounding an engine on a motor scooter or like motorised cycle. While embodiments and applications of this invention have been shown and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many more modifications are possible without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
Claims (6)
1. A motor scooter or like vehicle having an aircooled engine in an engine compartment, a fan mounted on the engine and driven thereby, a fan cover arranged to direct cooling air from the fan to the engine head, and a cooling air passage extending out of said fan cover to the upper portion of the engine compartment above the engine.
2. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the engine compartment is defined by a cover forming part of the vehicle body, said fan cover being within said body cover.
3. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said cooling air passage is adapted to receive only a restricted proportion of the air flow in said fan cover.
4. A vehicle as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, wherein said cooling air passage is defined by a nozzle secured to and extending through said fan cover at a location between the fan and the engine head.
5. A vehicle as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the said fan is fixed to a crankshaft extension of the engine for rotation therewith.
6. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
