Abstract
211,141. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Clarke, H. R.). Feb. 7, 1923, [Convention date]. Hand combination sets; magnetic instruments. -In a telephone hand set designed to eliminate howling, couplings are provided between the handle of the set and the instruments which will not be resonant at frequencies tending to produce howling. The handle 7 is preferably of phenol plastic compound, and has a fundamental vibration not exceeding 1,000. The conductors are embedded in the handle and terminate at the receiver end in threaded inserts 11. The receiver case 21 is preferably of phenol plastic compound,. and is formed with comparatively thick walls so as to have no resonance below 1,800 cycles. It is provided with three bosses which seat against the surface of the handle, and screws 22 pass through holes concentric with the bosses into the inserts 11 to secure the receiver and effect the connections. Recesses may be provided in the handle to receive bosses 47, 46 on the receiver and transmitter respectively to facilitate aligning the instruments. Microphones.-The transmitter comprises a microphone button 30 supported on a cup 31 and held by a spring 37 in contact with a diaphragm 32. Continuous with the cup is a threaded flange 36, which screws into a bushing 12 in the handle. The bushing serves as a termination for one of the conductors in the handle. Another connection to the transmitter is made through a spring 18 attached to a terminal 13. A case 16 of phenol plastic compound surrounds the cup 31, and both the cup and the case are non-resonant at frequencies below 1,800 cycles. The diaphragm 32 is held by the spring 37 pressed against washers 33, 34 and a snap ring 35 seated in an annular recess in the cup 31. Mouthpieces.-A mouthpiece 40 is supported on the case 16 by means of radial screws 41 engaging a tapped metal insert 17 in the case 16. Slots 42 are countersunk to receive the heads of the screws 41, so that the mouthpiece may. be removed without withdrawing the screws.
