Abstract

A disposable diaper having a backing sheet and a top sheet with an absorbent pad therebetween is provided with tape fasteners for securing the diaper on an infant and is further provided with another tape fastener 12 for securement across a tuck 50 in the diaper for better fit and prevention of waist leakage. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Diapers The present invention relates to disposable diapers, and more particularly to a tape fastener arrangement for use in obtaining a good fit while minimizing leakage at the waist of the diaper.
Various types of diapers have been developed in the past such as diapers which are of a box-pleated or hour-glass configuration in conjunction with which tape fasteners are used at the waist for securement of the diaper on the infant. These types of diapers have been devised to obtain a better fit, but due to movement of the infant and manipulation of the diaper and due to variations in the build of the infant, the diaper will show looseness at least in some portions. This looseness leads to failure of the waste fluids to reach the absorbent pad in part and eventually to leakage at the waist of the diaper.
The concept of the present invention is to provide an additional tape fastener removably mounted on the diaperfor use insecurementthereofacrossa tuck taken in a loose portion of the diaper to enhance the fit, prevent gaps, especially at the waist due to too loose a fit, and thereby to reduce or eliminate leakage of waste at the waist of the diaper, whilst also decreasing the bulkiness of the appearance of the disposable diaper on the infant.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an additional tape fastener which is removably secured on the top sheet of a diaper having an absorbent pad between the top sheet and backing sheet. A release sheet is secured in a desired accessible place on the diaper and the additional tape fastener is removably secured thereto. After the diaper is positioned and secured on the infant, a tuck is taken in a loose portion of the diaper and the additional tape fastener secured across the tuck.
The invention can be put into practice in various ways and a number of specific embodiments will be described to illustrate the invention by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a folded diaper in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a box-pleated diaper with an additional tape fastener secured to the front of the top sheet in accordance with the present invention; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a contoured diaper having an additional tape fastener secured to the front of the top sheet in accordance with the present invention; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a box-pleated diaper showing an additional tape fastener secured to the rear of the top sheet in accordance with the present invention;; Figure 5 is a perspective view of a contoured diaper showing an additional tape fastener secured to the rear of the top sheet in accordance with the present invention; Figure 6 is a schematic view showing a first step of peeling the additional tape fastener from the release sheet; Figure 7 is a schematic view showing the manner in which a tuck is taken and the additional tape fastener is applied; Figure 8 is a schematic view showing a final result of the invention; and Figure 9 is a schematic view showing the invention when a tuck is taken at the waist.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, a folded diaper 10 is shown with an additional tape fastener thereon. The tape fastener 10 includes a release sheet which is permanently affixed to either the top sheet or backing sheet of an otherwise conventional diaper which may be of any type and has a conventional absorbent pad disposed between the top sheet and the backing sheet. The absorbent pad is preferably of woodfluff, the top sheet is preferably of a non-woven material made from polyethylene or polypropylene fibres and the backing sheet is preferably a fluid impervious polyethylene sheet.
In Figure 2, the additional tape fastener 12 is shown secured to the front central panel 20 of a box pleated diaper having inwardly extending panels 22 and outwardly turned panels 24.
In Figure 3, the additional tape fastener 12 is shown secured to the front of a contoured diaper which may have elasticized members 28 in the crotch area for forming crotch seals.
In Figure 4, the additional tape fastener 12 is secured to the rear of the contoured diaper while Figure 5 shows the additional tape fastener 12 secured to the rear of a contoured hour-glass shaped diaper above the crotch area 30 and below the ears 32.
In use, after a diaper has been positioned and secured on an infant, the additional tape fastener is peeled from the release sheet as shown in Figure 6.
Then, a tuck 50 is taken in any loose portion of the diaper, preferably in the rear thereof to ensure better absorption by the diaper and the tape fastener 12 is secured across the tuck 50 in the final manner shown in Figure 8. If the tuck 50 is adjacent the waist, the additional tape fastener 12 can be secured at the waist itself.
Since there may be a steric hindrance when the tape fastener 12 is placed in front the additional fastener possibly interfering with the ordinary waist fasteners or making their use more difficult, it is preferable to obtain the closer fit at the rear portion of the diaper to ensure better adsorption, despite the additional manipulation of the infant, which this may entail.

Claims (11)
