Abstract
210,130. Scott, J. P. Oct. 17, 1922. Plates and sheets; wire fabrics; gratings; galvanic battery plates. - Flexible metal bodies are provided with stiffening means by fusing the body at the part to be stiffened, the rest of the body being compressed between members of heatconducting material. Foraminous electrodes or diaphragms used in the electrolytic production of hydrogen and oxygen &c. screens such as gas or liquid bubble screens, or flexible metal plates &c. may thus be provided on one or more sides with stiffened imperforate borders or edges, which may also be united to frames or supports. The edges of a single flexible body may be bent over on themselves so as to thicken the fused borders. In making an electrolytic electrode, one or more perforated or slotted plates or one or more interwoven or superposed layers of metal gauze cloth or netting 12 which may be coated with or composed of nickel, cobalt &c. are placed between a pair of metal clamps 10, 11 so as to press and compact the material to form parallel surfaces. The edges preferably project from the clamps and are fused by an oxyacetylene or oxyhydrogen torch so as to form the stiffened border. Two or more strips 13, 14 of iron, steel &c. to form bus-bars for the electrodes, may be, inserted in recesses 11<a> in any of the sides of the clamps so as to be united to the fused metal of the border. The clamps conduct the heat away from the part of the work clamped therebetween, and may be hollow with water or air circulation therefor. Metal mav be added to the weld by fusing a wire or rod of the same metal or of a metal which does not form an electrolytic couple therewith. Thus nickel may be used when the work consists of iron or steel. The edges of the electrodes may be bevelled or chamfered so that no part projects beyond the plane of the front face thereof. The electrode plates may be continuously or spot welded electrically or by oxyacetylene torch to sheet metal backing-plates, the electrode plates being spaced, if desired from the backing plates by studs, rivets &c. In Fig. 4, a bi-polar electrode is formed by welding the electrodes A, B to a backing plate 20 by roller electrodes 21, 22. In making a uni-polar electrode for the end of a multi-cell, a sheet of copper or other highly conductive metal may be also secured to the backing plates so as to ensure good current distribution in the cell.
