Drilling-machines. - A machine for boring living trees with intersecting sets of bores to receive colouring matters or dyestuffs, which are subjected to pressure and ascend like sap and stain the wood, comprises two or more drills and a driving-motor mounted on a carriage movable on a frame that is connected to a frame secured around the tree trunk. The trunk frame may consist of an open U-shaped frame closed by a detachable or hinged member b<4>. It is held in position by clamping-screws d bearing on the trunk a. The drill-carrying frame e is detachably and adjustably bolted to the member b<2> of the trunk frame, the rear end being carried by supports g. Two sets of parallel drills l<1> are connected to a carriage h movable along the frame e by a hand-wheel i' and rack-and-pinion gearing. An electric or other motor k is suspended from the carriage h and drives the drills through spur and worm gearing. After one frame e has been moved along the bar b<2> and one set of bores completed across the whole width of the tree, the frame is attached to the bar b<3> and the other set bored to intersect the first set at right-angles. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the trunk frame is replaced by a hinged strap and a tightening-screw o having right and left hand threads, the strap resting on supports driven into the tree. A frame q carrying two drills r is fixed on projections p on the strap. By shifting the strap round the tree the drills are adjusted for boring substantially radial bores as shown. The apparatus shown in Fig. 2 may be used to make one set of bores and the apparatus shown in Fig. 7 for making bores at right-angles to them. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that there may be one drill only. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
