Description

SPECIFICATION Window frame air duct arrangements This invention relates to window frame air duct arrangements, where the air duct passes right through the window frame from a valve on the inwardly facing side of the frame to an air intake column on the outwardly facing side of the frame.
In air ducts in a window frame, it is usual to design the air duct rectilinearly straight through the frame, the side of the air duct which faces inwardly into an inner lying space being convered by a regulatable valve while its opposite side, which faces outwardly towards the outer air, is covered with a metal place cover or the like which prevents hard rain from being forced inwards into the air duct together with an inner lying fly net, perforated sheet or the like which prevents flies and the like from penetrating inwards into the air duct. The known solution with the metal place cover is burdened with the disadvantage that the metal plate cover, unless it is inserted in the frame, will project outwardly from the frame and is exposed to deformation and other damage during storage and transportation. In addition, the solution represents considerable mounting work and creates problems of maintenance and the like.
With the present invention the aim is to achieve at least as good protection of the air duct against hard rain and the like, without having to use extra plate covers and without requiring extra mounting work of another protective means in connection with such a protection of the air duct.
Accordingly, the present invention consists in a window frame air duct arrangement which comprises an air duct extending right through the window frame from a valve on the inwardly facing side of the frame to an air inlet gap at the outwardly facing side of the frame, said air duct having an air inlet portion disposed just inside the outwardly facing side with its inlet mouth facing inwards towards an adjacent peripheral portion of an adjacent window sash, said air inlet portion of said air duct being shielded by an edge portion of said outwardly facing side of said frame while forming an inlet cavity in said frame inside said edge portion as a pressure compensating chamber between an inner main portion of said air duct and an outer gap between said frame and said sash.
The protection of the air inlet portion of the air duct which is intended is obtained in a relatively simple manner by designing the air duct with an angled-off path and by allowing the air duct to open out towards the outer air via the gap which is formed between frame and sash. In this way, disfiguring of the vertical outer side surface of the frame with air inlet openings, plate covers or similar devices can be avoided since the air inlet portion to the air duct is received in a shielded manner within the gap between frame and sash. In addition, there can be obtained the extra advantage that the air inlet portion can form a relatively shielded, large inner hollow space which can serve as a pressure relief chamber in front of the main portion of the air duct.
Preferably, the air inlet portion is arranged vertically over a drainage groove in the upper horizontal surface of the sash, the drainage groove and the air inlet portion together constituting the pressure compensating chamber. The sash is preferably provided at its upper outer edge portion with an oblique, outwardly and downwardly, bevelled guide surface disposed vertically below a downwardly directed, drip nose-forming edge portion of the frame, an oblique, upwardly and inwardly extending gap defined between frame and sash being immediately in front of the air inlet portion.
Special advantages are obtained due to the horizontally extending main portion of the air duct having its inlet mouth arranged in the upper region of the air inlet portion and the air inlet portion being defined between two downwardly diverging sides.
By means of the downwardly diverging sides in the air inlet portion, one can counteract possible penetration of moisture having the opportunity to draw itself further upwards to the main portion of the air duct.
In order that the invention can be more clearly understood, convenient embodiments thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cross-section of a window frame and associated sash, with an air duct illustrated in connection with the sash, in its closed position.
Figure 2 is a front sketch of an upper frame member of the frame with a valve shown in the closed position on the inwardly facing side of the window, in front of the air duct.
Figure 3 is a cross-section similar to that of Figure 1 illustrating an alternative embodiment.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, valve 10 is shown at the one end of an air duct 11 which is cut out in an upper, horizontal frame member 12 in a window frame 13. Alternatively, the air duct can be designed in the lower part of the frame or in the vertical part of the frame or in both vertical parts of the frame.
The window frame 13 and associated window sash 14 are made in a conventional manner of wood.
In the inwardly facing front side surface 15 of the frame member 12, there is cut out a relatively elongate groove 16 in which the valve 10 is inserted.
From the bottom of the groove 16, there is fashioned, over the major portion of the length of the groove, an air duct portion 1 la which extends in a straight line horizontally inwards into the frame member 12. The air duct portion 11 a opens outermost outwardly into an outer, downwardly opening air duct portion 11 b which has a triangular cross-section. The air duct portion 11 b thus has downwardly diverging sides 17, 18 and an opening 19 arranged just within an outwardly facing front side 20 of the frame member 12, with the opening 19 facing downwards towards an upper, outer edge portion 21 of the sash 14. The upper, outer edge portion 21 of the sash 14 is provided outermost with a downwardly obliquely bevelled guide surface 22 and a draining groove 23 present within.Between the outwardly facing front side 20 of the frame member 12 and the outer, downwardly diverging side 18 of the air duct portion 11 b, there is fashioned a triangular frame portion 24 which forms a drip nose on the lower portion of the frame member 12 in order to guide heavy rain from the frame member 12 to the guide surface 22 on the sash 14. At the same time, the frame portion 24 provides for covering the inlet 25 to the air duct portion 11 a. By means of inner lying air duct portion 11 and the adjacent draining groove 23, there is formed an effective pressure compensating chamber between the air duct portion 11 a and gap 26 between the drip nose-forming portion 24 and the guide surface 22.In the air duct portion 11 a, there is inserted, by simple pushing-in, a V-shaped member 27 of netting or other perforated material in order to prevent the entry of flies and the like through the valve. Alternatively, a perforated plate or netting can be fastened to the inner, downwardly directed side 17 in the air duct portion 11b.
Valve 10 consists of five separately made members 30,31,32,33, 34 which are adapted to be pivoted relative to each other about horizontal axes between open and closed positions. Further details of the valve itself are illustrated and described in Application No. The valve is fixed by means of screws 35 via the holder-forming member 31 of the valve to the window frame, almost the whole of the valve being received in groove 16 just in front of the air duct 11.
The air duct is made in the form of a continuously broad and relatively shallow gap which forms main portion 1 1a of the air duct and at the end of this gap there is designed a correspondingly broad air inlet portion 11 b with a substantially greater height than the main portion 11a and with the mouth arranged a certain distance within the outwardly facing side surface of the frame. Alternatively, the air duct or its main portion 11 a extends more or less rectilinearly from the gap or mouth 26 obliquely upwards towards the valve 10 and, if desired, the extra tension in the portion 11 b or parts of this portion can be retained as a pressure compensating chamber in front of the main portion 1 lea.
In Figure 3, there is shown an alternative embodiment which is especially simple to produce. Air duct 111 has a substantially shorter main portion 11 1a than the main portion 1 1a shown in Figure 1 and correspondingly a substantially broader air inlet portion 111 b than the inlet portion 11 b which is shown in Figure 1. The air inlet portion is especially simpler to make since there can be employed with advantage a so-called round milling cutter in a so-called punch machine. By employing a short main portion and elongate (broader) inlet portion, there is achieved an easier access to the main portion of the air duct.
