Abstract
209,930. Forbes, Sir C. S. Dec. 27, 1922. Games of chance. - In apparatus of the kind wherein a model aeroplane &c. rotates around a support and is provided with means for dropping a ball &c. into receptacles or upon targets, the ball-releasing mechanism is controlled bv the movements of a pendulum or gravity - actuated device displaced relatively to the body of the aeroplane by centrifugal action. The model aeroplane 10 is carried by a counterbalanced arm 11 secured to a sleeve 12 which fits loosely on a stationary spindle 13. Loose wheels 28 or other lost-motion mechanisms are carried by the. sleeve 12 and rest upon a disc 26 driven manually or by an electric or clockwork motor. The friction of the loose wheels 28 causes a gradual starting and stopping of the aeroplane when the disc 26 is started and stopped respectively. The wheels 21 of the aeroplane are attached to pivoted cage 15, Fig. 3, within the aeroplane. Centrifugal force swings the wheels outwardly relative to the body of the aeroplane and rotates the cage. A ball 29 resting on one bar 16 of the cage is thus allowed to fall, but is retained within the body of the aeroplane by a lower bar 16d until by the disconnection of the drive the aeroplane slows down and the ball falls from the aeroplane into one of a number of compartments 38, Fig. 1. Instead of a cage 15, the wheels 21 may rock an open-ended tube relative to pins on the aeroplane, or viceversa, in order to release the ball. In a modified apparatus the base board 14 is rotated in a direction opposite to the aeroplane by attaching the rotor of an electric motor to the base board and mountin the field magnets on the stationary base. The wheels 28 are then driven from the base. board and drive the sleeve 12 through a disc resting on the tops of the wheels. The apparatus may be operated by an alternating-current motor. In a modified arrangement for producing lost motion in the wheels 28, these, when being driven, screw along their spindles 27 against the resistance of coil springs which return the wheels after the drive has been disconnected. In a further modification, the wheels are connected to the foot of the sleeve 12 by elastic springs which are wound up and unwound when the drive is started and stopped.
