Abstract
In a gas-fired appliance, a mounting plate 9 for the mixer tubes 17 of gaseous fuel burners is located in position with reference to a gas rail 7 carrying gas valves 10 that control the supply of fuel to injectors by means of surfaces on the plate which abut locating surfaces on brackets 3 and 4 that support the gas rail 1. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in and relating to gas-fired appliances
This invention relates to gas-fired appliances and has particular although not exclusive reference to gas cookers and hobs with gas burners.
Many forms of gas-fired appliance employ burners fed with a gas/air mixture and it is common practice to entrain air in a stream of gas emerging from an injector and to complete mixing by means of a mixer tube. To ensure adequate entrainment of air and effective mixing, the projector must be aligned accurately with the mixer tube. The alignment problem arises in a more acute form in the case of gas cookers and hobs where several injectors are fed from a common gas rail and each supplies gas to a different mixer tube.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an arrangement which ensures the accurate alignment of injector and mixer tube in a simple and economic manner.
According to the present invention, a gas-fired appliance includes a surface or surfaces, at least one injector, means positioning the or each injector with reference to said surface or surfaces, and, for the or each injector, a mixer tube, and means for positioning the or each mixer tube with reference to said surface or surfaces.
The means for positioning the or each injector may comprise a first member, which may be common to all the injectors, and which is supported by said surface or surfaces.
A second member also supported by said surface or surfaces may be provided for locating the mixer tube and may be common to all the mixer tubes.
The first member may comprise a gas rail by which gas is supplied to the or each injector.
The surface or surfaces may be located on a bracket or brackets secured to a frame member of the appliance. Preferably, there are two brackets secured to the frame member in spaced apart relationship. Where a gas rail is provided, the spacing of the brackets is such that the rail is supported at or adjacent each end by one of the brackets.
The second member may be secured to a spillage tray and may be detachably secured to the gas rail. In an embodiment, the second
member is secured to the gas rail via a bracket
mounted upon the gas rail.
The second member may be secured to the spillage tray adjacent the front thereof, means being provided at the rear of the spillage tray for locating the rear and reieasably retaining it in position.
By way of example only, an embodiment of the invention suitable for a gas cooker will now be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Fig. 1 is a front elevation of part of the cooker,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of part of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective view,
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of another component of the cooker,
Figs. 5 and 6 are, respectively, side elevation and rear view of the component of Fig. 4, Fig. 7 is a scrap view of a detail, and,
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a mounting bracket.
Fig. 1 shows the upper part 1 of a front frame member of a gas cooker. The part 1 includes a horizontal member 2 to which are attached two upstanding brackets 3, 4 formed with flanges 5, 6 respectively.
Supported by the flanges 5, 6 and secured thereto by screws (not shown) is a gas rail 7. The gas rail 7 comprises a tubular gas supply passage 8 integral with a strip-like mounting member 9 with a planar lower surface to which are secured combined gas valve/injector assemblies 10. Four such assemblies are shown in Figs. 1 and 2 although it will be understood that the number will depend upon the number of gas burners to be supplied.
Also mounted upon the gas rail 7 is a bracket 11 shown in perspective in Fig. 3. The bracket is a metal pressing with side limbs 1 2 apertured as indicated at 1 3 to accommodate the supply passage 8 and the mounting member 9 and to retain the bracket 11 on the rail 7. The rear wall 14 of the bracket 11 has a central hole 1 5. The function of the bracket is described below.
The upper surface of the cooker is constructed by a spillage tray 16, square when viewed in plan and dished to accommodate four gas burners (not shown) fed via supply/mixer tubes 1 7 located beneath the spillage tray. Each tube is joined at one end to a burner head (not shown) while the other end is cut away as at 1 8 to provide a semicircular configuration that is supported on shoulder 19 in a semi-circular cutout 20 in a mounting bracket 21 attached to the bottom of the spillage tray.
The bracket 21 has edge surfaces 22 and 22a accurately located with respect to the centres of the semi-circular cutouts 20. Formed centrally in the front face of the bracket 21 is a tapped hole 23.
At the rear the spillage tray has rectangular slots 24 (Fig. 6) which co-operate with tongues 25 pressed out of sheet metal brackets 26 located at the lower edge of a splash back part 27 of which is shown in Fig. 8. Each bracket includes horizontal surfaces 28 and upstanding tabs 29 and each side of the tongue 25.
While in position, the spillage tray 16 is supported by the flanges 5, 6 at its forward end.
One of the edge surfaces 22 rests on the flange 5 and the other on the flange 6. In addition, one of the edge surfaces 22a abuts against the outer edge of flange 5 and the other edge surface 22a abuts against the outer edge of flange 6. In this way, the spillage tray is accurately located and held against lateral movement relatively to the gas rail 7. The rear of the tray 1 6 rests on the surfaces 28, the tongues 25 engaging in the rectangular slots 25 to locate the tray. Finally, upward movement of the forward end of the spillage tray 1 6 is prevented by a screw passed through the hole 1 5 and screwed into the tapped hole 23 in the bracket 21.
In the construction described above, the injectors are located in position with reference to the upper surfaces of the flanges 5, 6 which support the gas rail 7 to which the injectors are secured. The same flanges 5, 6 also locate the mixer tubes 1 7 because the latter are fixed in the bracket 21 which rests on the flanges 5, 6.
The positions of the injectors on the gas rail 7 are accurately determined as are the positions of the cutouts 20.
Thus, the injectors are accurately aligned with the mixer tubes and are accurately spaced from the ends thereof. In this manner gas emerging from the injectors entrains the correct volume of air and effectively mixes with the latter prior to the mixture reaching the burner head.
Accuracy results from the location of the mixer tubes and the injectors with reference to the same surface or surfaces -- in the example described above, the surfaces of the flanges 5, 6.
It will be appreciated that the location principle just described can also be applied to a gas hob, the flanges 5, 6 or equivalent surface being supported from the framework of the hob.
