Abstract
The present invention relates to a self-locking and self-cleaning nut. Said nut comprises a tapped internal barrel portion (1) and an external skirt portion (5) coaxial with the barrel portion (1) and connected to the latter by an annular portion (6) located on the opposite side to the bearing surface side of the nut, the barrel portion (1) being internally provided throughout its height with a slot (3) located opposite an arris (11) of the flats of the skirt portion (5) and opening into the space (10) formed in that region between the skirt portion (5) and the barrel portion (1), so as to provide accommodation for released dirt. The nut according to the invention applies to the assembling of any mechanical members by means of a nut and a screw. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to self-locking and self-cleaning nut
The present invention has essentially for a subject matter a self-locking and self-cleaning nut of the type comprising a tapped internal barrel portion and an external skirt portion in coaxial relationship to the said barrel portion and connected to the latter by an annular portion located on the opposite side of the nut to that of its bearing surface.
There had hitherto never been proposed to provide the above-defined nutwith a means of selfcleaning, i.e. a means for cleaning and therefore removing the dirt possibly present on the screw thread as the screwing of the nut and/or the screw progresses.
The purpose of the present invention is to fill in this gap by providing a novel and improved selflocking nut characterized essentially in that the above-defined tapped barrel portion of the nut is internally provided, preferably throughout its height, with at least one slot opening into the space comprised between the nut skirt portion and the nut barrel portion.
According to another characterized feature of the nut according to the invention, the said slot or slots are preferably parallel with the axis of the nut and are provided in the barrel portion opposite one or more arrises or intersecting lines between two adjacent flats of the external skirt portion of the nut.
Thus, the existence of a considerable space between the barrel portion and the skirt portion of the nut in the region of the corners or arrises formed by the flats on the internal periphery of the skirt portion is turned into account to ensure the release and removal of dirt during the screwing.
According to another characterizing feature of the invention, the aforesaid slot opens onto the nut bearing surface side into an annular space provided between the lower face of the skirt portion forming the nut base or bearing face.
It is thus understood that the aforesaid space advantageously forms a reserve for the dirt discharged through the slot, so that if the amount of dirt is greater in volume than the slots, the said dirt can be discharged without the nut becoming stuffed therewith, which would be prejudicial to correct screwing.
The invention is also directed to an assembly of any parts or members using at least one self-locking and self-cleaning nut according to the invention.
Other characterizing features of the invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed description made with reference to the appended drawings given solely by way of example and wherein:
Figure 1 is an axial sectional view of a nut according to the invention ready to be tightened on a member, the said nut section passing through two diametrically opposite arrises of the nut skirt portion, i.e. along the line 1-1 of Figure 3;
Figure 2 is a view from below of the nut shown in
Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a top view of the same screw.
According to an example of embodiment and referring to the appended drawings, a self-locking and self-cleaning nut according to the invention comprises essentially a tapped internal barrel 1 in the thread 2 of which are provided one or several slots such as 3 extending throughout the height of the barrel 1, as seen clearly in Figure 1, in parallel relationship to the axis 4 of the nut.
The barrel 1 is connected to an external skirt portion 5 coaxial with the said barrel, through the medium of an annular portion 6 located on the opposite side to the bearing surface of the nut on the member 7 to be tightened. At 8 is shown a base at the periphery of the skirt portion 5, by the face of which the nut bears upon the member 7.
Thus, during the screwing of the nut on a screw 9, the base 8 along bears upon the member 7 and the annular portion 6 is resiliently deformed to obtain an axial displacement and radial tightening of the barrel portion 1 on the screw 9, thus obtaining a locking effect.
According to the invention, the dirt possibly present on the thread 9a of the screw 9 will be scraped by the thread 2 of the barrel portion 1 as the screwing proceeds, so that the said dirt will be discharged through the slot 3 opening into the space 10 comprised between the hexagonal internal periphery of the skirt portion 5 and the external cylindrical periphery of the barrel portion 1.
More precisely and as better seen in Figure 2, the slot 3 is provided in the barrel portion 1 opposite an arris or intersecting line 11 between two internal and adjacent flats 12, 13 of the skirt portion 5. Otherwise stated, the slot 3 opens opposite the space 10 which is greater in the region of the arrises or corners 11 of the hexagonal skirt portion 5, thus advantageously allowing the release of the dirt scraped off by the barrel portion 1. Of course, several slots such as three may, without departing from the scope of the invention, be provided opposite the other angles 11 of the skirt portion 5, i.e. opposite the spaces 10 in the region of the said angles.
Reverting to Figure 1, it is seen that the slot 3 opens at the bearing face or base 8 of the nut into an annular space 14 provided between the lower face la of the barrel portion 1 and the lower face 8a of the skirt portion 5. Such an annular space 14 advantageously constitutes a reserve for the dirt scraped off by the nut during the screwing, so that the latter may in no case become stuffed should the amount of dirt scraped off be very important and greater in volume than the slot 3 and the space 10.
According to the form of embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, the slot 3 is substantially rectangular in cross section.
However, other slot shapes for the tapped barrel 1 may perfectly be contemplated without departing from the scope of the invention.
There is therefore obtained, according to the invention, a special nut advantageously provided with one or several self-cieaning slots and the geometry of which is such that the slots do not result in a general weakening of the nut in traction, since the said slot or slots affect only the tapped barrel portion 1.
The invention is by no means limited to the forms of embodiment described and illustrated which have been given by way of example only. In particular, it comprises all means constituting technical equivalents to the means described as well as their combinations, should the latter be carried out according to its gist and used within the scope of protection claimed.
