Abstract

Synthetic resins are produced by condensing carbohydrates, preferably polyoses, with urea with or without a catalyst such as an acid, and subsequently incorporating a methylene hardening agent. The products are potentially reactive or infusible and insoluble according to the degree of heat and pressure to which they have been subjected. An example shows the proportions of urea, corn starch and sulphuric acid which may be used. The reaction is carried out and the products are utilizable in exactly the same way as described in Specification 208,193, which employs phenolic bodies instead of the urea.
