Abstract

A tank for storing of gasses, which have been condensed under pressure, for instance butane, propane and propylene, for use in the operation of cars, has the form of a hollow ring constituted by two deep-drawn ring elements 1 and 2 welding together. The tank is intended for the mounting in the body of the car by means of the bolt 14 and the nut 15 against the part 12. The total outer diameter of the tank corresponds to the wheel diameter of the cars in which the ring tank is used so that it can be located in the spare wheel space. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Tank This invention relates to a pressure reservoir having the form of a hollow ring and preferably for use as a tank for mounting in cars for gases which have condensed under pressure, for the operation of the cars.
Petrol-operated cars can, through certain modifications, be changed so as to operate on gases which have been condensed under pressure, for instance butane, propane, propylene, or a mixture of these gases.
For storing the gases there must be mounted in the car, instead of or in addition to the petrol tank, a reservoir which is dimensioned in such a way that it can withstand the pressure of the condensed gases.
The dimensioning is carried out in agreement with pressure tank rules in force and the tanks have been constructed as corresponding containers for bottled gas for household and industry, i.e. as cylindrical containers having domed end plates and having flange connections for the valve systems.
The drawback of this form, the bottle form, is that the tank takes disproportionally too much space in the luggage compartment of the car.
Efforts have been made to remedy this drawback through a special modification of the bottle shape in which the cylindrical part is made very short so that the tank in principle consists of two domed end plates which have been welded together.
Through this measure the height of the tank becomes particularly small and since the outer diameter of the tank at the same time corresponds to the diameter of the wheels of the car the tank can be placed at the location of the spare wheel.
These flat type tanks, however, have the drawback that due to their shape they are difficult to mount and fasten to the body of the car and furthermore the tanks are very heavy since the wall thickness must be dimensioned with a view to the great tank diameter and since the form factor at the same time will be very great due to the fact that the end plates should be domed as little as possible with a view to the fact that the tanks should not be too tall.
On the other hand the geometrical form of the flat type tanks, which do not require too much space in the luggage compartment, brings about a very heavy tank.
This is a most unhappy quality in flat type tanks.
Since their manufacture takes much material they are expensive. Furthermore it means in itself an extra expense to drive about in a car with a heavy load which is also detrimental to the roadability of the car since it is placed in the very backmost part of the car.
To this should be added that the flat type tank may position the car in a more expensive tax class (in Denmark cars are taxed according to weight).
The above indicated drawbacks of usual bottleshaped tanks and of the flat type tanks, which is a variety thereof, are avoided by shaping the ringformed tank according to the invention in which the tank proper has an outer diameter and height as a corresponding flat type tank while the diameter of the ring corresponds to the diameter of an ordinary bottle-shaped tank.
The ring tank can therefore be dimensioned on the basis of the rules of calculation for a cylindrical jacket, i.e. without the form factor which should be used for end plates and with the use of the diameter of the rings in the calculation formula instead of the outer diameter of the tank.
Using the same material, for instance R St.
37-2 according to DIN 17.100, and using an outer diameter and height as in usual flat type tanks the weight of the ring tank will be about 20% of that of the flat type tanks while the volume will be augmented by about 10%.
At the same time the ring tank will be firmly standing on its ring -- while the flat type tank rocks about the uttermost point of the end plates - and it is fastened right away with the devices which are normally present for the mounting of the spare wheel, through the central hole which the ring forms.
In the following the invention is more closely illustrated, reference being had to the schematic drawing.
Fig. 1 is a section of the ring tank.
Fig. 2 is the same ring tank seen from above.
In fig. 1 is shown the embodiment of the ring tank.
Preferably it consists of two halves, 1 being the upper and 2 being the lower half which have both been manufactured by deep-drawing of steel sheet or sheet of another material.
The halves 1 and 2 are joined by weldings 3 and 4 where the welding takes place against a backing strip in the form of welding rings made of flat bars 5 and 6, or the welding joints are made as a beaded joint or welding takes place without any backing strip.
The tank has a number of connecting pieces 7, 8, 9, and 10 for filling, drawing off, and monitoring.
The tank may have the here indicated number of connecting pieces or another number, dependent upon requirements and wishes.
The tank is mounted through the hole 11 against the front 12 in the body 13 of the car by means of the bolt 14 and the nut 1 5.
Mounting and fastening can conveniently take place at the location of the spare wheel and by means of devices which are used for the mounting of the spare wheel.
The total outer diameter of the ring tank corresponds preferably to the diameter of usual wheels for cars.
1 6 is the ring tank wall which has a thickness which according to usual calculation formulas is dimensioned on the basis of the diameter of the ring.
Since this diameter is the same as the height of the tank and substantially smaller than the total outer diameter of the tank and since furthermore the form factor of the end plates cancels in the calculation formula, the wall thickness and therefore the weight of the ring tank is substantially lower than those of the flat type tank, viz. 20% thereof in the case of use of the same material quality.
Due to the characteristic ring-shaped embodiment of the tank according to the invention the volume will at the same time be augmented by about 10% in comparison to a corresponding flat type tank having the same outer dimensions.
This is due to the fact that the flat type tank has its maximum height in the middle, which makes for a small volume, while the ring tank has its maximum height in the ring centre 17, i.e. located on a great diameter where the height makes for a great volume.
In addition to the embodiment of the drawing, other embodiments are conceivable in which the division into parts is different and in which the weldings are placed in a different manner. Also other methods of manufacture such as moulding or extrusion in suitable materials are conceivable.
