Abstract

209,484. Aitken, H. W. Oct. 10, 1922. Roller mills. - In a sugar-cane mill with an upper roller coacting with each of two lower rollers, the upper roller a, Fig. 1, and the lower roller c on the delivery side have intermeshing ridged and furrowed surfaces, the angle of the ridges to the axes of the rollers being far removed from 90‹ and the surfaces of both rollers, or of the roller c only, being arranged with gaps or channels to allow of the escape of the juice in a circumferential direction, while the lower roller b on the inlet side does not intermesh with the upper roller a. The roller b has a comparatively smooth surface, but it may have cane-gripping serrations and the usual juice-grooves. The rollers a, c may have rectangular projections d, Figs. 2 and 6, of pyramidal form, the apex being a line e and the slopes being curved. The gaps shown allow of the escape of the juice. The roller b may have circumferential ridges with intervening grooves of large dimensions suitable for splitting the cane.
