SUGAR-MAKING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concem: Be it known that I, EDWARD HORROCKS MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kahuku Mill, Oahu, Hawan, have invented an Improvement in Sugar Making Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n sugar making apparatus, and more especially in devices for crushing the cane to express the juice. 0
An object of my invention is to provide improved crushing rollers which are so arranged as to secure a maximum amount of juice in the crushing operation.
A further object of my invention 1s to provide crushing rollers arranged in pairs, one of said rollers having a series of knobs or lugs arranged to enter corresponding sockets or recesses in the companion roller.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a section on the line 1--1 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section through a portion of the upper and lower rollers.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the upper and lower rollers.
Fig. 4 is a section along the lines 44 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I provide two main crushing rollers, these rollers being shown at A and B, respectively. The upper roller A is provided with a series of sockets a, while the lower roller B is provided with a series of knobs or lugs 6, arranged to enter the sockets a. As will be seen from Fig. 3 the sockets a. are of a rec tangular shape on their outer edges. These sockets, however, have curved inner faces 0?.
The lugs or knobs b are oblong in shape as seen in Fig. 3, and they are curved as shown at 19 The rollers are so geared together that the lug or knob b will enter its corresponding socket on so as to leave a space a between the knob and its socket, into which the cane is crowded.
From the foregoing description of the various'parts of, the device the operation thereof may be readily understood.
Consider, for instance, Fig. 1, the cane is fed into the rollers which crush it in the rolling action between the opposing rollers, the knobs b forcing a portion of the cane into the socket a. This movement results in expressing a larger quantity of juice than is obtained by means of rollers of the ordinary type, and it, therefore, does represent the recovery of .a larger amount of juice or sugar from the bagasse.
In Fig. 2 the reason for the efficient action of the rollers is readily seen. In this figure it will be observed that with the rollers A and B revolving in the direction shown by the arrow the tendency is to crowd the cane not only between the surface of the roller itself, but also between the curved edges a and 6 I claim:
1. In a sugar mill, a pair of crushing rollers, one of said rollers being provided with a series of sockets having continuous walls, and the other of said rollers being provided with a series of knobs or protuberances arranged to enter the sockets of. the companion roller, said knobs being spaced from the said continuous walls.
2. In a sugar mill, a pair of crushing rollers, the upper rollers having a series of longitudinally extending sockets provided with continuous walls and the lower roller having a series of longitudinally extending knobs or protuberances arranged to enter the sockets of the upper roller, said knobs being spaced from the bottoms of said sockets.
3. A sugar mill comprising a pair of crushing rollers, one of said rollers having a series of oblong sockets provided with continuous walls provided with curved bottoms, and the other roller having a series of oblong knobs arranged to enter said oblong tions of the knobs being curved, said knobs sockets but being spaced from the walls 0i being arran ed to enter the sockets, but be- 10 the socket.. ing spaced mm the walls thereof when in 4.
