Abstract
209,385. Automat - Industrie - Ges. Jan. 8, 1923, [Convention date]. Drilling; attachments for screwing and tapping. -An attachment for drilling and screw-cutting comprises a friction clutch which may be disengaged when either the rotational torque or the axial-feed pressure on the tool becomes excessive, the clutch being re-engaged when the torque or pressure becomes normal. The driving member 1 has a depending flange 1<b> provided with slots 1<a> in which engage lugs 4<a1> on a clutch disc 4<a>, a second disc 4b being attached to the driven member 3. Balls 4<c> attached to a cage 4d engage circular pockets in the clutch discs and are pressed into engagement therewith by springs 6 and a nut 8. The springs 6 are provided with arms 6<a>, Fig. 5, which bear on pins 4f, Fig. 1, attached to the lower disc, the resilience being adjustable by means of a pin 12 on a rotatable sleeve 5. A scale on the member 1 and a pointer on the sleeve determine the setting for different-sized tools. When the axial-feed pressure exceeds a predetermined amount the member 3 is raised relatively to the member 1 against springs 13, constructed similarly to the springs 6, and the clutch discs are separated. The springs 13 are adjusted simultaneously with the springs 6 by a lug 13<d> engaging a slot in the sleeve 5, which is secured to the member 1 by a wire ring 17. A disc 16 secured to the member 3 indicates upward movement of this member and may be used to operate an acoustic or optical signal. A shaft 2 serves to centre the device. The arms of the springs 6 and 13 may increase in breadth and thickness towards their roots and may take the form shown in Fig. 7, in which one spring 18 is secured against rotation by pins 21 and is engaged by pins 20 on a rotatable spring 19. The device may also be used in tap wrenches. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that the device may be used also in hand tools, die-stocks and as a toolholder or drill chuck, and may be incorporated in the drill or feed-spindles of machine tools. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
