Abstract
Spots of paste are applied to a moving web (1), by means of a cam roller (2) over which the web (1) is passed and an applicator (5) located adjacent the region of contact of the web (1) with the roller (2), the cam roller (2) having at least one projection (6) from its surface such that when the projection is brought into contact with the web (1) by rotation of the cam roller (2), the web (1) is temporarily urged into contact with the applicator (5) to cause the application of the paste to the surface of the web (1). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Device for applying paste
This invention relates to devices for applying paste or other liquids or viscous substances to a moving web of paper or other material and is concerned more particularly with the application of spots of such liquids or substances to a relatively quickly moving web where the difficulty arises of the inertia of components used to apply the liquid or subtance where it is necessary to move these components quickly towards and away from the web.
It is an object of the present invention to alleviate the above difficulty.
The present invention consists in a device for applying spots of paste to a moving web, which inc!udes a cam roller over which the web is passes and an applicator located adjacent the region of contact of the web with the roller, the cam roller having at least one projection from its surface such that when the projection is brought into contact with the web by rotation of the cam roller, the web is temporarily urged into contact with the applicator to cause the application of a liquid or viscous substance to the surface of the web.
Preferably, the projection takes the form of a roller inset in the surface of the cam roller and freely mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to the axis of the cam roller.
In carrying the invention into effect according to one convenient mode by way of example, the accompanying drawing shows diagrammatically a device for applying spots of paste to a relatively fast moving web of paper indicated as 1 and shown travelling generally upwardly in the drawing.
The web 1 passes over the surface of a cam roller 2 which is rotated in the direction of arrow 3 and which has inset into its surface a free running roller 4 whose surface is just proud of the surface of roller 2 and is mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to the axis of roller 2.
Each time the roller 4 is brought into contact with the web 1, the region of contact with the web is displaced (to the left) into contact with the point of a paste pen or applicator 5 having a spring-loaded ball point to cause a spot of paste to be applied to the surface of the web 1 on the other side from roller 4. Whilst the roller 4 is in contact with the web it will be rotated relatively to the roller 2 in the direction shown by arrow 6.
The roller 2 is driven at a speed of rotation such that its peripheral speed is less than the linear speed of the web 1 passing over it and such that the roller 4 is brought into contact with the web with the web with a frequency which in relation to the linear speed of the web ensures that spots of paste are distributed along the length of the web with the desired spacing.
A number of paste pens 5 are mounted on a common manifold 7 through which paste is supplied to the pens 5, the axis of the manifold being parallel to the axis of the roller 2, so that in use each time roller 4 contacts the web a series of spots of paste are deposited across the width of the web.
The ends of the manifold 7 are mounted in slots in a frame (not shown) and are spring loaded to permit the spacing between the tips of the pens and the surface of roller 2 to be adjusted by rotation of a cam 8. Adjustment of the pens 5 towards the web 1 will cause the spring-loaded ball points to be held operated for a longer period and thus longer spots of paste to be deposited.
The above arrangement has the advantage that spots of paste of the desired size may be deposited upon the web with accuracy despite the facet that the web is moving relatively quickly and may require the application of paste for as short a period as say 6 milliseconds. This may be achieved since no component having high inertia has to be moved from the rest.
The apparatus may be used to apply spots of paste for inter-ply pasting, to produce a multi-ply web, although the spots may be applied for other purposes.
1. A device for applying spots of paste to a moving web, which includes a cam roller over which the web is passed and an applicator located adjacent the region of contact of the web with the roller, the cam roller having at least one projection from its surface such that when the projection is brought into contact with the web by rotation of the cam roller, the web is temporarily urged into contact with the applicator to cause the application of a liquid or viscuous substance to the surface of the web.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the projection is in the form of a roller inset in the surface of the cam roller and mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to to the axis of the cam roller.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the cam roller is driven so that at the region of contact the surface of the cam roller is moving in the same direction as the web but a slower speed.
4. A device as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the applicator is in the form of a pen having a spring-loaded ball point.
5. A device as claimed in claim 4 wherein a supply of liquid or viscuous substance is fed to a number of pens through a common manifold.
6. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein means are provided for adjusting the distance between the tip of the or each applicator and the surface of the cam roller and thereby adjusting the duration
