Collapsable barrels made from staves.-A bilge barrel or other package made from staves is provided with a spiral groove 2 on the outside in which a continuous strip 3 of metal is embedded, the strip being pressed from the V-shape shown in Fig. 3 to the flat condition in which its edges are embedded in the material of the staves. The roller used to flatten the strip may have spiral teeth which form indentations in the strip and prevent it from springing back to its original shape. The barrel thus formed is cut longitudinally into halves for convenience of packing and is reassembled by means of two end hoops.
