Description
SPECIFICATION
Element for retaining at least one elongate
member, such as a pipe
This invention relates to an element for retaining at least one elongate member, such as a pipe, comprising a mounting portion for attachment to a support, and at least one retaining portion for partially enclosing the circumference of the elongate member, engagement means being provided to enable the retaining element to be connected to a further retaining element.
A retaining element of this type which serves specifically as a cable clamp (German Patent
Specification 23 45 843) is already known as prior art. This cable clamp is designed such that a snap fastener-like locking connection is provided for joining it to further cable clamps so that a plurality of jaw-shaped cable clamps of this type can be assembled to form a captive unit. The disadvantage with this arrangement is that the cables can be laid in only one plane so that, for example, subsequent fitting of further cables in a different plane is not possible with this known arrangement. Moreover, the cables to be laid must each be approximately axially parallel so that, for example, a cable run turning through 900 cannot be secured using such known retaining elements.
In contrast, the present invention aims to provide a retaining element of the type mentioned in the introduction and so designed as to permit at least one further elongate member to be fitted such that it is not coplanar with the firstmentioned elongate member.
To achieve this aim in accordance with the invention the engagement means comprises recesses in which hook-like engaging elements of a further retaining element can be resiliently snap-engaged.
Thus according to one aspect of the invention there is provided a retaining element for at least one elongate member comprising a mounting portion for attachment to a support, at least one retaining portion for a partially enclosing the circumference of the elongate member and engagement means to enable the retaining element to be connected to a further retaining element, the engagement means comprising recesses in which hook-like engaging elements of a further retaining element can be resiliently snapengaged.
This ability for resilient snap-engagement, which is effected both positively and nonpositively, facilitates the fitting of the further retaining element, subsequent to fixing of the firstmentioned retaining element, in a simple manner.
The hook-like engaging elements of the further retaining element engage in the recesses of the retaining element already attached to, e.g., a motor vehicle it being possible with various embodiments of further retaining elements for the new pipe to run either parallel or at right angles or at any other desired angle to the originally laid pipes.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the recesses are located between two said retaining portions, so that snap-in engagement of the engaging elements does not cause any interference with the elongate member, e.g. pipe held by the first-mentioned retaining element.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention these recesses can be of rectangular form.
In one embodiment of the invention the hooklike engaging elements are spaced apart in the longitudinal direction of the retaining section of the further retaining element to be connected to the first-mentioned retaining element, so that a second pipe run lying axially parallel to the first pipe run can be fitted.
In another embodiment of the invention the hook-like engaging elements are spaced apart in a direction at right angles to the retaining section of the further retaining element to be connected to the first-mentioned retaining element, so that a second pipe run lying at right angles to the first pipe run can be fitted.
In acccrdance with a further preferred feature of the invention the hook-like engaging elements can each comprise a resilient arm with a hook portion which can engage in the recess. Preferably two hook-like engaging elements are spaced apart with respective hook portions facing one another.
In accordance with a further aspect of the invention there is provided a retaining element for at least one elongate member comprising at least one retaining portion for partially enclosing the circumference of the elongate article and engagement means to enable the retaining element to be connected to a further retaining element by an engagement action in which hooklike engaging elements of one of said firstmentioned and further retaining elements resiliently snap-engage in recesses of the other of said first-mentioned and further retaining element.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a retaining system for a plurality of elongate members, the system comprising two retaining elements, each having a retaining portion for partially enclosing the circumference of a said elongate member and engagement means by which said retaining elements can be interconnected to form a retaining assembly, wherein said engagement means comprises in one retaining element a plurality of recesses and in the other retaining element hook-like engaging elements adapted resiliently to snap-engage in the respective recesses, and wherein one or other of said retaining elements comprises mounting means for attachment to a support.
Exemplary embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:~
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a retaining element according to the invention;
Figure 2 is an elevational front view of the retaining element of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an elevational front view of a further retaining element which can engage in the retaining element of Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the retaining element of Figure 3;
Figure 5 shows an assembly of two retaining elements according to Figures 1 to 4;
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of another possible embodiment of a further retaining element to be connected to a first retaining element;
Figure 7 is a side elevational view of the retaining element of Figure 6; and
Figure 8 shows the assembly of a further retaining element of Figures 6 and 7 with a first retaining element.
The retaining element 1 shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a mounting portion 2 for attachment to a support and two retaining portions 3 for partially enclosing the circumferences of two elongate members in the form of pipes. In this case the mounting portion 2 comprises a through opening which can be driven, for example, onto a stud attached to the underside of a motor vehicle body.
Between the retaining portions 3 the retaining element 1 comprises two rectangular recesses 5 which constitute engagement portions 4. These recesses 5 are formed at the upper end of the mounting portion 2 adjacent the mouth of the through opening, and are consequently located at a point where the retaining element, when fixed, is particularly firmly secured.
A further retaining element 1 0, which is to be attached to the element of Figures 1 and 2 and is shown in Figures 3 and 4, again includes two retaining portions 3. Two hook-like engaging elements 6 and 7 project upwardly from an interconnecting web member 14 which is connected to the retaining portions 3 by way of a stud 13. These two hook-like engaging elements 6 and 7 consist of resilient arms 8 and 9, respectively, the upper portions of which are formed into hook members 1 1 and 12. The resilience of the arms 8 and 9 allow the arms to flex as shown in Figure 3, in which the broken lines represent the form of the hook members 1 1 and 12.
The hook members 1 1 and 12 of the two hooklike engaging elements 6 and 7 of the retaining element 10 can engage in the rectangular recesses 5 of the retaining element 1 as shown in
Figure 3 to form an assembly as shown in Figure 5. This makes it possible to arrange, at right angles to the run A of two pipes in the retaining portions 3 of the retaining element 1, further pipes directed along runs B and C, as shown in Figure 5, and held in the retaining portions 3 of the retaining element 10. With their hook members 11 and 12, the hook-like engaging elements 6 and 7 engage positively and non-positively in the rectangular recesses 5 of the retaining element 1 so that pipes lying at right angles to the pipe run A can be readily attached by way of the retaining section 3 of the retaining element 10.
However, it is also possible to arrange the hook-like engaging elements 6 and 7 to be spaced apart in a mutually inwardly facing manner and in a direction parallel to the longitudinal direction in which the pipes to be held in the retaining section 3 will extend, so that a further retaining element 100 of the form shown in Figures 6 and 7 is formed. Again, the hook-like engaging elements 6 and 7 comprise resilient arms 8 and 9 respectively, the upper portions of which are formed into hook members 1 1 and 12. These two hook members 1 1 and 12 can snap-engage in the rectangular recesses 5 of the first retaining element 1 so that an assembly as shown in Figure 8 is obtained. As can be seen, the first retaining element 1 in this case has two retaining portions 3 for two pipe runs A.Since the hook-like engaging elements of the second retaining element 1 00 are spaced apart in the longitudinal direction of the retaining portion 3, a pipe run D, lying axially parallel to the pipe runs A, is provided for a pipe which is introduced into the retaining portion 3 of the second retaining element 100, as shown in
Figure 8.
The retaining element 100 may have, instead of the single retaining portions 3 shown in Figures 6 to 8, two or more such retaining portions (not shown in detail).
Moreover, it is possible to equip both retaining elements 10 and 100 in turn with rectangular recesses 5 so that further retaining elements can be attached thereto via hook-like engaging elements 6 and 7 to form a chain-like assembly.
Rapid and secure connection of further retaining elements to a retaining element already attached to a motor vehicle can be achieved in all cases, the pipe run not necessarily having to be absolutely axially parallel to the first pipe run.
Advantageously, this results in considerable broadening of the range of application of the retaining elements.
