Abstract

A mineral insulated cable comprising one or more than one electrical conductor of aluminium or an aluminium-based alloy embedded in, and insulated from a surrounding sheath of steel by, compacted mineral insulating powder.

Description

SPECIFICATION An electric cable This invention relates to a mineral insulated cable comprising one or more than one electrical conductor of a metal or metal alloy embedded in, and insulated from a surrounding sheath of metal or metal alloy by, compacted mineral insulating powder, usually magnesium oxide.
According to the present invention, in a mineral insulated cable as hereinbefore described, the or each conductor is of aluminium-based alloy, and the sheath is of steel.
The sheath may be of mild steel, but preferably the sheath is of stainless steel.
The mineral insulated cable of the present invention has an important advantage over mineral insulated cables hitherto proposed and used, in that no copper is used in the cable so that the cable is lighter in weight than known mineral insulated cables of the same size and can be substantially cheaper.
Furthermore, the cable of this invention is particularly suitable for manufacture by the method described and claimed in the Complete Specification of our UK patent No.
1 554859 in which a metallic tape and at least one metallic conductor rod are fed continuously substantially vertically downwards towards tube reducing means, the advancing metallic tape is folded transversely around the advancing conductor rod or rods until the longitudinal edges of the tape abut to form a sheath tube from which the or each conductor rod is maintained positively appropriately spaced, the abutting longitudinal edges of the advancing folded metallic tape are welded or otherwise permanently secured together, and the sheath tube so formed containing the conductor rod or rods and free flowing mineral insulated powder is drawn substantially vertically downwards through the tube reducing means.
1. A mineral insulated cable as hereinbefore described, in which the or each conductor is of aiuminium or an aluminium-based alloy, and the sheath is of steel.
2. A mineral insulated cable as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the sheath is of stainless steel.
