Description
SPECIFICATION
Plastics components for making a drawer
The invention relates to plastics components for making a drawer, comprising side walls which have at their rear ends tenons projecting inwardly at right angles for fitting in position a plastics rear wall of compartmented vertical section, the side walls being made up of two components and being smoothfaced both inwardly and outwardly as well as being provided at the lower inside edge with a groove for the fitment of an inserted drawer bottom.
There is known an easily-assemblable part of a piece of furniture, preferably a drawer, which has hollow walls which are assembled from two shellshaped wall parts each with a smooth outer face, said wall parts having pegs and sockets integrally moulded at the faces opposed to one another and so co-ordinated with one another and shaped that the pegs engage in the sockets and hold the wall parts together by means of barbs, there being arranged at one of two adjoining walls of the part of the piece of furniture, in the region of an edge, assembling lugs which are engaged from the interface hook-like in the cavity of the other wall, the assembling lugs being formed integrally with one of the wall parts and one of the wall parts of the wall having the assembling lugs having strips masking the interfaces (British patent specification no. 1332162).
On the other hand, there is known a drawer with a drawer carcass injection moulded in one piece from plastics material and designed with double walls at least at the sides, in which transverse ribs, shortened in relation to the inner side wall, are provided in the space between the double walls of the sides, there being inserted from below with positive interlocking an inset which extends in the transverse direction from wall to wall, includes at its lower part a mounting support, opened towards the side, for a guide, and furthermore is designed as a ribbed moulding which contains the ribs in its upper part and, considered in the direction of its length, has transversely-offset panels which rest alternately against the inner surfaces of the outer side wall and the inner side wall and are joined by transverse ribs, and has in its lower part for the guide a mounting in the form of a set-in groove (British patent specification no. 1578672).
The problem to which the invention is devoted is to improve and further develop components for making a drawer in accordance with the state of the art firstly described above in such a way that there can be made therefrom a drawer which has the advantages of that secondly described above whilst eliminating its disadvantages, especially the onepiece nature of its carcass with its inherent large space requirements in transport and storage, by requiring instead only very modest space in trans pqrt and storage. Moreover, the drawer in accordance with the invention should be easy and simple to assemble, and especially also offer the possibility of being manufactured with arbitrary width dimensions with very modest moulding-tool and production costs.
For the solution of this problem, a drawer made of components of the kind set forth is characterised in that the component constituting the outer skin of the side wall forms a channel which opens essentially downwardly and is smooth-walled both externally and internally, and the other component of the side wall is in the form of a ribbed moulding which is provided at its upper part with ribs which are disposed upright and transversely in the channel, have strengthening formations which extend lengthwise of the channel and are formed on a continuous strip which is provided at its lower part with a groove open towards the side and/or downwardly for the insertion of drawer guide rail means and in the region of its lower longitudinal edge with means for connecting same to the lower edge of the outer skin.
The connecting means in the region of the lower longitudinal edge are preferably of a form-locking nature. The groove for the insertion of the bottom of the drawer is formed at its upper side by an inwardly-projecting formation on the outer skin and at its lower side by a ledge on the ribbed moulding projecting parallel to said formation. This projecting ledge is advantageously partly interrupted. The inwardly-projecting formation in the outer skin is preferably in the form of a lip with a sectional shape tapering in the direction of its outer edge. The projecting ledge on the ribbed moulding is provided at intervals with slots for the reception of tongues projecting downwardly at the associated lower edge of the outer skin.In accordance with an advantageous development these tongues may be provided with formations gripping from behind and which are preferably mushroom-shaped in form.
Owing to the specific construction of the side wall of a drawer according to the invention, it is not only possible to give this component an outstanding rigidity which puts it in the position to withstand high stresses; the material wall thickness of the outer skin can at the same time also be kept relatively very small, so that the component can be produced at lower cost on account of the lesser consumption of material used. Owing to the construction of the outer skin which in one piece forms the upper longitudinal edge and the two walls, there are eliminated joints which are disadvantageous both during the production and especially on usage.
Owing to the forming of the slot, close to the lower inner edge for the insertion of the drawer bottom, it is ensured that the load essentially stressing the drawer, and which acts on the bottom of the drawer, is passed in the shortest possible way to the drawer guides and thus to the frame of the piece of furniture. For this reason the groove is formed by the two parts fitted into one another and forming the side wall, the bottom side of the groove, on which the bottom of the drawer is supported, being in fact formed by the inserted ribbed moulding on which the drawer guides are also mounted. The upper limitation ofthe groove is formed at the outer skin ofthe side wall, so that in this arrangement there is but one single junction between this smooth-walled side wall skin and the bottom, it being possible to keep this junction particularly small and thus tight by special forming of the transition. Because of the
arrangement of connecting means along the full
length of the two parts fitted into one another, this
attitude of the two parts to each other is fixed controllably so that it is possible to glue or heat seal the parts together. If the connecting means is formlocking, such a welding or gluing together may even be dispensed with, and thereby the passing over of forces on account of the loading of the bottom of the drawer is improved.
According to an advantageous development, the groove for the insertion of the drawer bottom is formed at its upper side by setting back the lower edge of the outer skin and at its lower side by a ledge formed on the ribbed moulding and disposed parallel to said lower edge. With this formation ofthe groove, the drawer bottom is advantageously trough-shaped with outwardly-offset upright edges.
This trough-shaped drawer bottom may also be provided with partitioned sub-divisions.
The formation of the groove for the reception of the drawer bottom between the two lower edges of the channel-section skin and the ribbed moulding offers not only the advantages already mentioned, but it can also be shaped in such a way that a drawer assembled from component parts in accordance with the invention can be altered in depth, as a deep-drawn trough-shaped bottom, preferably of plastics material, can be inserted instead ofthe plate-shaped drawer bottom. As the inner walls of the component parts forming the drawer moreover extend at a downward inclination, so that these component parts become broader towards their bases, the side walls of the one-piece trough-shaped bottom, inserted instead of the plate-shaped bottom, are also to be formed with an inclination. This offers the possibility of stacking these trough-shaped parts nesting one within another in space-saving relationship for dispatch and storage.
According to an advantageous development the component parts in accordance with the invention are characterised in that the assembling tenons for the rear wall are formed on a part bent inwardly through a right angle at the rear end of the outer skin. At the edge of the forward end of the outer skin or at the edge of the ribbed moulding there may be formed dowels for fitting a front which is of wood material. The assembling tenons preferably have
U-section open towards the horizontal. A pin is advantageously formed in the middle ofthe base of the U-section of the assembling tenons, the pin being parallel to the sides of the U and projecting beyond said sides. The pins may be propped against the sides and the base of the U by stiffening ribs.
The pins are preferably provided, in the reach therein whereat they project freely from the
U-section of the tenons, with a laterally-inclined surface which is located away from the open end of the tenon. The walls with a compartmented section which can be pushed home overthetenons have holes co-ordinated with the pins.
A simple, secure and form-locking junction with the component parts of the cross walls is given by the above-described formation of the junction means at the forward and rear ends of the side walls.
When the assembling tenons are arranged at a part of the outer skin bent off through a right angle, there is but a single joint between the longitudinal walls and the cross walls. The cross walls may be composed of a hollow compartmented section extruded from plastics material. These walls may therefore be of any desired length, and the width of the drawer can therefore be adapted easily to any desired or prescribed dimension, without there being any need for any changes of shape whatsoever to that end.
The pins arranged in the tenons, in cooperation with associated holes in the cross walls, enable the latter to be pushed home on the tenons, the ends of the pins in doing so being reflexed somewhat and snapping into the associated holes, so that the cross walls are securely and simply held in a form-locking manner, without additional measures being necessary. k is, of course, also possible to glue or heat-seal the cross walls as well. A greater inherent stability can be achieved in that way, and a further achievement is that the joint between the cross wall and the inwardly-bent part of the side wall is hermetically closed towards the interior of the drawer.
A part bent inwardly through a right angle is preferably also formed at the forward end of the outer skin. Assembling tenons may be formed at this inwardly-bent part for insertion of a front wall with a compartmented section. In accordance with another specific embodiment, the inwardly-bent part is provided at its vertical end edge with a chamfer facing towards the drawer interior. It forms in that way a semimonocoque. The inwardly-bent part at the forward end ofthe outer skin then conforms to a part disposed at right angles of the inserted ribbed moulding, and these interengaging parts of the outer skin and the inserted ribbed moulding are provided with mounting openings for a drawer front.
These mounting openings are preferably formed in such a way that those in the outer skin are wide and round, and those in the part disposed at right angles ofthe ribbed moulding are oblong and are lined up with the aforesaid round openings. The shanks of bolts for attachment of the drawer front, which is of wood material, are passed one through each of the two lined-up openings, the head of each bolt resting upon the surround of the oblong opening and catches hold ofthe same at the back, so that the drawer front can be set and adjusted relative to the drawer or to align same with the fronts of adjacent pieces of furniture. It is, of course, possible also to provide at the forward end of the side walls other known connecting means for the mounting of the drawer front, especially such means as provide for adjustment of the drawer front vertically and laterally and subsequent fixing thereof.
The parts injection moulded from plastics material call for the greatest expenditure with regard to the moulding tools and the manufacture. In accordance with the present invention the quota of these component parts required for one drawer is considerably reduced compared with plastics drawers hitherto known. In that way the production is considerably less expensive. A further advantage with regard to the manufacturing costs arises from the fact that both the width and the depth can be changed within wide limits by very simple measures, without addi tional or other moulding tools for injection-moulded parts being required. Component parts in accordance with the invention can be manufactured for a certain depth of drawer with one set of injectionmoulding forming tools, with which all desired or occurring drawer widths and depths can be manufactured. As only a few different drawer depths are standardized in the furniture industry, a significant simplification is achieved with the component parts in accordance with the invention and particularly also a considerable reduction in the general manufacturing costs.

Fig. 12.
There is illustrated in perspective in Fig. 1 a drawer which is assembled from individual component parts in accordance with the invention. The individual component parts have not yet been put together in Fig. 1. For the sake of better understanding, the front wall ofthe drawer has been omitted.
The side walls 1 are joined by tenons 2 with the rear wall 3 and the plate-shaped bottom 6 is received in a groove 4 in each sidewall 1 and a groove 5 in the rear wall 3.
The side walls 1 are shown in perspective in Fig. 2 in a dismantled condition. They consist of an outer channel-section part 7 and a ribbed moulding 8 to be inserted from below into the channel formed by the channel-section part 7. There are formed on the ribbed moulding at the upper part thereof upright ribs 9 which are perpendicular to and transverse of the moulding and are provided with strengthening formations 10 thereon which extend substantially lengthwise. In the lower part of the ribbed moulding, the lower longitudinal edge 11 is provided with junction means 12. Alaterally-opening groove 13 for the insertion of drawer-guide rails is arranged at the outer side. The ribbed moulding is provided at its rear end with an extension for the guide and which projects beyond the channel section skin 7.
The skin 7 is provided at its rear end with a part 14 bent inwardly through a right angle and on which the tenons 2 are formed. This inwardly-bent part 14 is provided, particularly at the inner side, with a fillet
15 at the transition to the smooth-walled formation of the side. The outer skin 7 is provided at the forward end with a forward part 16 bent inwardly through a right angle, the end edge of the part 16 being formed with a chamfer 17 facing the drawer interior. The inwardly-bent part 16 is open in the shape of a window at the front, especially at its upper part, to receive a part 18 disposed at right angles at the forward end of the ribbed moulding 8.
The skin 7 is provided at its lower inner edge with a projecting lip 19. At the inner end of the lip 19, the inner side wall continues downwardly and is provided with tenons 20 which engage as junction means in the junction openings 12 of the ribbed moulding. The extension 21 ofthe inner side wall 22 of the outer skin 7 forms the base, the lip 19 the upper limitation, and the projecting lower edge 11 of the ribbed moulding the lower limitation, of the groove 4 for the insertion of the drawer bottom (Fig.
7).
The ribs which form the upper part of the ribbed moulding 8 are shown in particular in Figs. 3 and 4.
Accordingly, ribs 9 extending perpendicular to and transverse of the moulding are formed on the continuous flat upper side 23 of the moulding-proper and they are provided at one side or both sides with strengthening formations 10 thereon which extend lengthwise of the moulding. In the example here represented these strengthening formations are substantially triangular in shape, but they may, however, also be of any other shape.
The junction means arranged at the lower inner edge may be fashioned in the form of catches 20 (Figs. 5 and sue), which are formed at the lower continuation ofthe inner side wall 22. Conforming to the catches 20 are recesses 12 in the lower end flange 24 ofthe ribbed moulding 8. These recesses 12 are mushroom-shaped in outline with a stem 25 opening to the edge of the flange 24. It can be achieved by appropriate, somewhat downwardly inclined formation of the walls defining the stem 25, that, on insertion of the catches 20, the arms 26 at both sides of the interposed slot 25 are pressed resiliently somewhat outwardly, so that there is a friction-tight joint at this position. Because of this joint displacement of the parts 21 and 24, thus of the outer part, ofthe skin 7 relative to the ribbed moulding 8, and vice versa, is prevented.
In the views of Figs. 5 to 6a the lips 19 have been omitted for the sake of clarity.
Another form of the joint is shown in Figs. 6 and 6a. In this case the recesses 12 are made as rectangular holes and the catches 20 are provided centrally of their lengths with a slot 27 which extends to the bot tom thereof. Because of this, it is possible for the two parts ofthe catches to flex somewhat resiliently relative to one another, for they are provided at their ends with outwardly-projecting barb-shaped lugs 28 to grip behind the recesses 12, as can clearly be seen particularly in Fig. 6a. In that way there is obtained between the parts 21 and 24, and therefore also between the channel-section parts 7 and the inserted ribbed moulding, a positive coupling which is stable and form-locking in two directions at right angles to one another.
The ribbed moulding 8 is provided at its outside with a groove 13 open towards the side. This groove 13 is constituted at its upper side by a cross-piece 29 on the top side 23 of which the ribs 9 are formed. The cross-piece 29 extends over the full width of the channel 30 formed by the outer skin, butts at its inner edge against the inner surface, facing the channel 30, of the inner wall 22 of the skin, and underpins at its outer edge 31 the lower edge ofthe outer wall 32 of the skin.
The base of the groove 13 is formed by a vertical web 33 which is formed on the underside of the horizontal cross-piece 29 substantially at the middle of the latter. There is formed at the lower end of this web 33 a cross-piece 34 which extends parallel to and is spaced above the flange 24 and forms with a vertical web 35, formed at the outer edge thereof, and the flange 24 a box which is closed by the extension 21 of the inner wall 22 of the skin. The vertical web 35 is nearly co-planar with the outer wall 32 of the skin.
The above-described formation ofthe ribbed moulding 8 has a groove 13 open towards the side forthe insertion of guide rails which in their turin constitute the direct connection with the frame ofthe piece of furniture. This formation is also especially suitable for the insertion oi a plate-shaped drawer bottom 6 into the groove 4.
In accordance with another exemplary embodiment, which is represented in Fig. 15, the outer side wall 32 of the skin is stretched downwardly as far as about the level of the lowermost flange 24 of the ribbed moulding. The horizontal cross-piece 29 is then braced with its outer edge from the inside against a shoulder 36 on the inside of the outer wall 32 ofthe skin, and the mounting formed therebelow for the drawerguideway means 37 is open in the downward direction. In the case of this construction there are no outwardly-projecting formations of the ribbed moulding below the vertical web 33, on the contrary the web 33 is continued in the vertical web 35.The drawer guideway means 37 inserted into the space between the web 33 and the extended outer wall 32 is led around the lower edge of the extension of the outer wall 32 and there connected to the frame 38 of the piece of furniture. With this specific embodiment of the side wall 1, the latter is continuously smooth-surfaced to the lowermost edge.
It is also shown in Fig. 15 how, in accordance with a further development, the groove is formed at the
lower inner edge of the side wall, in order to hold, in
place of the plate-shaped drawer bottom 6, a trough 39 which increases the overall depth of the drawer interior. The side wall ofthetrough 39 is provided with an outwardly-bent upper end 40 which preferably has an upwardly-projecting flange 41 at its edge. The bent upper end 40 rests on the somewhat retracted end edge 42 of the lowermost fla nge 24 and is jammed between this end edge 42 and the lower edge 43 of the inner side wall 22 of the skin. It can be observed from Fig. 15 that the inner surface of the side wall of the trough 39 is aligned with the inner surface of the inner wall 22 of the skin ofthe side wall 1.
The mortise-and-tenon joint between side wall 1 and rear wall 3 or front wall is illustrated in Figs. 8 to 11. There are formed on the closed end ofthe part 14 bent inwardly through a right angle of the channelsection side wall 1,tenons 2 which are U-shaped in section with the sides horizontal and directed to the outside. The length dimension of the two sides 44 corresponds to the crossbars 55 and the base 46 or the respective free space between outer wall 47 and inner wall 48 of the closed compartmented section of the rear wall 3, which is preferably produced as an endless part extruded from plastcis material and is then cut to length.
Pins 49 are formed within the described U-shaped section substantially midway between the sides 44 and also midway of the length of the latter, the pins 49 being parallel to the sides and projecting beyond the outer edges of the sides 44 ofthe tenons about substantially the plate thickness of the rear wall 3.
These pins 49 are propped within the U-shape ofthe tenons by stays 50 against the sides 44 and by ribs 51 on the base of the U-shape. The pins are provided at their free ends with a level 52 facing toward the outer ends of the tenons 2. On setting the wall part 3 up on the tenons, the pins 49 through resilient yielding of their free ends, and also the stays 50, are bent rearwards to such an extent that the wall 3 can be pushed until it comes up against the closed end of the inwardiy-bent part 14 of the channel-section side wall 1. When this position is reached each of the pins 49 snaps into a hole 53 therefore through the outer wall part 47 of the rear wall 3 (Fig.11). The rear wall 3 is positively connected by these means with the component part of the side wall and is secured against creep or slippage. The groove 4 in the com- ponent part 1 and the groove 5 in the component part 3 are then on a level with one another and pass over into one anotherforthe insertion of the drawer bottom 6.
The component parts may be formed in such a way that the side parts 1 are provided both at the forward end and the rear end with a part bent inwardly through a right angle and with tenons 2, so that there results a four-sided drawer whereof the component parts for forming the sides are made up of channel-section outer portions and inserted ribbed mouldings, both produced by injection moulding, while the front wall and the rear wall 3 are of compartmented sections which are produced by an extrusion technique and are cut off to any desired or prescribed length so that drawers of any width can be constructed.
In accordance with another specific embodiment, the side components 1 are provide with parts 16 bent inwardly through a right angle at the front end, the outer skin of these components 1 being represented in Fig. 12 and 14. The inwardly-bent part 16 has a continuous inner wall 54 on which is formed the projecting lip 19 which defines the upper side of the groove 4. The outer wall forms an uninterrupted flange with an outer portion 55, an upper portion 56 and an inner portion 57. The flange portion 55 ends level with the lower edge of the outer part 32 of the outer wall and may there be provided with a catch 58 for further positive connection with the inserted ribbed moulding 8. The catch 58 engages behind the outer edge 31 of the cross-piece 29 of the ribbed moulding. The inwardly-bent part 16 is, moreover, provided in its continuous inner wall 54 with two circular openings 59 which are preferably situated one below the other. On insertion of the ribbed moulding 8 into the channel-section outer part 7, the part 18 disposed at right angles at the forward end of the ribbed moulding 8 is applied behind the flange portions 55, 56 and 57, of the inwardly-bent part 16 of the channel-section part and is thereby secured. In this part 18 there are arranged oblong holes 60 which are aligned with the openings 59 and serve as abutments for the heads of screws through which the front of the drawer is mounted. This drawer front is of wood material and is formed in conformity with the conventional furniture walls. In virtue of the arrangement of the oblong holes 60, it is possible to position the screws and therewith the drawer front, before final securing thereof, to adjust the drawer front in relation to the drawer and in relation to the fronts of adjacent piece of furniture. When the shanks of the screws have a smaller diameter than one corresponding to the minor dimension of the oblong holes 60, it is possible to true-up the drawer front both iaterally and depthwise.
The lower edge 61 of the part 18 disposed at a right angle at the forward end of the ribbed moulding is provided with a recess. It can certainly be gathered from Fig. 14 that the groove formed at the side walls does not exist below the border 19. In this specific embodiment the drawer bottom is passed below the inwardly-bent parts 16 and 18 and the border 19 through the recess in the lower edge 61 into a suitable groove provided in the drawerfrontto befitted, in order likewise to catch hold atthefront end.
