Abstract
208,751. Thornley, F. C., Tapping, F. F., and Reynard, O. Aug. 29, 1922. Pulp, preparation of.-In a process for obtaining cellulose from vegetable materials, for example saw dust, wood waste, rushes, bamboos, sea weed, &c., in which the material is treated with sulphur dioxide gas in a liquid medium, the gas is used in a finely divided state produced mechanically by intense agitation. The liquid medium may be lime water, milk of lime, a soluble alkaline carbonate, or the oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate of an alkaline earth suspended in water, the suspended or dissolved substance acting as a carrier for the sulphur dioxide. In an example, 1 ton of vegetable matter mixed with 4 tons of liquid medium is agitated for 2-12 hours by a screw propeller in a gas-tight pan while 100-200 lbs. SO2 per ton of material is led in through the bottom of the pan at a temperature of about 100‹ C. The liquid medium contains preferably 17-34 pounds of magnesium carbonate per 100 gallons liquid. The product obtained consists of a solid portion consisting mainly of cellulose and a small liquid portion containing the non cellulose constituencies with only a small proportion of mineral matter.
