Description

SPECIFICATION Mining machines This invention relates to mining machine.
In particular, although not exclusively, the present invention relates to mining machines which in use wins mineral from a longwall face and which comprises a rotary cutter head carried on a ranging arm pivotally mounted for vertical movement of the cutter on the machine body. In operation the machine repeatedly traverses to and fro along the longwall face with the cutter head in raised and lowered modes, respectively.
With a known mining machine the ranging arm comprises a housing pivotally mounted at one side to the machine body and a gear arrangement for transmitting drive from a motor provided on the machine body to the cutter head, the gear arrangement including a drive shaft extending along the pivotal axis of the ranging arm mounting and projecting from the machine body into the gearbox housing defined by the ranging arm. Unfortunately, such ranging arm support is tending to be found unsuitable for use with the relatively high powered machine recently introduced into underground mining practise and failure of the pivot mounting for the arm is tending to be a relatively frequent occurrence.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved mining machine which tends to overcome the above mentioned problems.
According to the present invention a mining machine comprises a body housing a drive motor for a rotary cutter head carried on a ranging arm supported by a pivotal mounting provided on the machine body, the pivotal mounting comprising two bearing formations associated with opposed sides of the ranging arm, respectively.
Preferably, the bearing formation comprise cylindrical components for engagement by bearing formations associated with the op' posed sides of the ranging arm, respectively.
Preferably, the cylindrical components of the bearing formation on the machine body are mounted internally the associated bearing formations associated with the ranging arm.
Conveniently, ranging of the arm is controlled under the action of a ram mounted at one end on the machine body and connected at the other end to a pivot plate assembly provided on the arm.
Preferably, the pivotal axis of the ranging arm substantially is horizontal and the pivot plate assembly provided on the arm is intermediate the two opposed sides of the ranging arm when viewed in a direction normal to the pivotal axis of the arm.
By way of example only, one embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan of a mining machine constructed in accordance with the present invention a portion of the drawing being shown in cross-section; Figure 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1; Figure 3 is an end elevation of Fig. 1; and Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken through a portion of the mining machine, the drawing being on an enlarged scale compared to the previous Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
In the drawings, a double ended ranging drum shearer constructed in accordance with the present invention is shown to comprise a body 1 carried on shoes 2 (see Fig. 2) arranged to guidably slide along an armoured flexible conveyor 3 extending along a longwall face in a mineral seam. Only a section of the conveyor pans is shown in the drawing, the chain and flights being omitted for the sake of clarity. Driven sprockets 4 provided on the side of the machine body have teeth or abutments (not shown) for drivable engagement with a series of formations provided on a fixed track 5 secured to the conveyor. In operation, each sprocket is driven by a motor (not shown) provided in a haulage unit 7 mounted one at each end of the machine body to repeatedly traverse the machine to and fro along the longwall face such that rotating cutter heads on drums 8 and 9 carried on ranging arms 10 and 11 win mineral from the working mineral face. As indicated adjacent to the left hand margin of Fig. 2 each cutter head can be raised or lowered into alternate operational modes by ranging the associated ranging arm about its pivotal mounting 12 provided outboard of the working face side of the machine body.Pivotal movement of each ranging arm is controlled by a pair of hydraulic rams 1 3 connected between pivotal mountings 1 4 provided on the machine body and pivotal mounting pin assemblies 1 5 provided on a pivot plate assembly comprising a pair of plates 1 6 provided on opposite sides of the associated ranging arm, respectively. Figs. 1 and 3 show the pivotal mounting on the pivot plate assembly to be located intermediate the two opposed vertial sides of the ranging arm when viewed in a direction normal to the pivotal axis of the ranging arm.
Each pivotal pin assembly 1 5 comprises a central through pin extending across the gap between the two plates 1 6 and two sleeve components arranged around the through pin and mounted on opposite sides of a pivot clevis 20 fixedly attached to the end of the piston rod 21 of the associated ram 1 3.
Each pivotal mounting 1 2 comprises two inwardly directed support bearings mounted on opposite sides of the ranging arm, respectively. Each support bearing comprising a generally cylindrical bearing member 22, 23 (see Figs. 1 and 4 which internally engages an associated outer annular bearing component 24, 25 provided on the ranging arm, the bearing components 24, 25 being associated with opposed sides of the ranging arm, respectively.
Each bearing member 22 forms part of the outer housing member 26 which extends along the machine body to be fixedly secured to the machine body such that the associated bearing member provides substantiai support to the ranging arm. The bearing members 23 are provided on the machine side of the associated ranging arm and are mounted in the side wall of the machine body.
The drive for each of the rotary cutter heads 8, 9 is transmitted from a motor housed within motor section 30 on the machine body via gearing 31 housed within an associated gearbox 32 to a shaft 29 drivably supporting a spur gear wheel 34 which in turn drivably engages a train of gears 35 extending along the ranging arm (see particularly Fig. 4) to a hollow drive shaft 36 extending along the axis of the rotary cutter head. The drive shaft is drivably connected to the cutter head via two epicyclic reduction gear arrangements 37 and 38 mounted in a gearbox 42 located within the hub 39 of the cutter head. The hollow drive shaft 36 permits a ventilating air flow to be induced towards the working face.
From Fig. 1 it can be seen that the drive shaft 29 is supported in bearings 40 and 41 provided within the gearbox 32 but is not supported by the portion of the pivotal mounting 1 2 on the working face side of the ranging arm.
It will be appreciated that in operation as the machine traverses to and fro along the longwall face winning mineral from the working face the pivotal mounting 1 2 for each ranging arm is capable of withstanding the rigours and reaction forces associated with the cutter head winning mineral. Thus failure of a pivotal mounting 1 2 tends to be a relatively infrequent occurrence and the loss to mineral production due to breakdown is relatively low.
In other embodiments of the invention, the mining machine comprises only one ranging arm carrying cutter.
