Stopping machinery by movement of guard.-A machine for staying the corners of boxes of the type in which a knife or presser descends on an anvil is provided with a safety stop motion operated by the downward movement of the anvil B, Fig. 1, brought about by the extra resistance offered to the knife or presser when the fingers of the operative are on the anvil. For this purpose the anvil is supported on cams C, Figs. 1 and 2, pivoted on a rod C<1> to which is connected an arm C<2> engaging bar D supported on arms D<2> on an axle D<3> which is spring actuated so as to retain the anvil B in place during the ordinary working of the machine but allows it to descend when unusual pressure is applied. When this occurs a spring-pressed rod F normally obstructed by one of the arms D' moves laterally in the direction of the arrow, carrying with it the lower end of a bar G pivoted at G<1> to a standard end engaging at its upper end with a bar J which' is thus moved in the direction of the arrow 2, Fig. 3, and being caused to rotate by the engagement of a pin J<1> with checks J<2> causes a hook O<1> on an arm 0 to engage a toothed sector on the clutch ring N and so stops the machine. The hook O<1> is positively kept out of contact with the ring N during the remainder of the travel of the knife or presser by means of an arm K<1> on the rod J engaging by a bowl K with a cam L which rotates the rod so as to keep the hook in the disengaged position.
