Abstract

A pair of trousers is provided with pocket 4/5 on the outside of the knee portion of each trouser leg, each such pocket being adapted to have a pad 8 inserted therein to cushion the wearer's knees when in the kneeling position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Protective clothing The present invention relates to protective clothing and more particularly to protective clothing for use by a person engaged in laying carpets, or other activity involving kneeling.
In laying carpets the carpet-layer has to kneel much of the time and therefore it is known practice for carpet-layers to wear pads on their knees. These knee-pads are held in position by straps, one above and one below the knee. However, there is a considerable disadvantage in such an arrangement in that the straps tend to cut into the sinews at the back of the knee when the carpet-layer kneels down. The present invention is concerned with overcoming this problem in a simple and economic manner.
1 ) According to the present invention a pair of trousers is provided with a pocket on the outside of the knee portion of each trouser leg, each such pocket being adapted to have a pad inserted therein to cushion the wearer's knees when in the kneeling position.
The following are preferable or alternative features which can be adopted within the broad concept specified in the proceding paragraph.
2) Each pocket may consist of a piece of material which extends across the knee portion from one seam of the trouser leg to the opposite seam, the side edges ofthe piece of material being stitched into the two trouser leg seams and the piece of material also being stitched along its lower edge to the trouser leg.
3) Each pocket may consist of a patch pocket stitched on its two sides and bottom edge to the respective trouser leg.
4) Each pad for fitting into the associated pocket would preferably consist of resilient material contained within a case made of similar material to the pocket and to the material of the trousers themselves.
In orderthatthe invention may be more readily appreciated a specific embodiment will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective diagrammatic view of a pair of trousers incorporating the present invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of one of the pads intended to fit into the trousers shown in Figure 1.
A pair of denim trousers 1 has legs 2 and 3 each fitted with a pocket 4 and 5 respectively, also made of denim material, in the region of their knee portions.
In this example each pocket 4 and 5 consists of a rectangular piece of denim material approximately x x 11-" which has its longer sides stitched into the two seams of the associated trouser leg, 6a, 6b in the case of the leg 2 and 7a, 7b in the case of the leg 3.
The lower edges of the rectangular pieces of denim 4 and 5 are stitched to the denim material of the respective trouser legs 2 and 3.
Each of the two pockets 4 and 5 is intended to have a pad 8 inserted into it.
Each of the pads 8 is approximately 84" x 11" and comprises a case 9 into which a piece of-2" thick sponge material 10 is adapted to fit.
The case 9 is made of a single piece of denim material which is folded back on itself and then stitched along the edges at 11 and 12 to leave a flap 13.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 1 the wearer's knees would come about one-third of the way down the pockets 4 and 5 when the wearer is standing. This is so that when the wearer kneels, and causes the trouser legs to ride up the wearer's legs, his knees then come about half-way down the pockets 4 and 5, and thus be in the optimum position to cushion the wearers knees.
It is intended that the carpet-layer should wear the trousers illustrated as ordinary working trousers and that only when he is about to lay a carpet he will slip the two pads 8 into the pockets 4 and 5, and then remove them after he has finished the carpet laying.
Although a detailed embodiment of the invention has been described with reference to the accompanying drawings it will be appreciated that there could be variations in the dimensions to suit the particular wearer.
Further more the construction of the pockets 4 and 5, and of the pads 8 can be varied within the broad statement in paragraph 1) above.
In this specification the term "trousers" includes trousers incorporated in protective outer garments such as overalls, boiler suites, and the like.
1. A pair of trousers provided with a pocket on the outside of the knee portion of each trouser, each such pocket being adapted to have a pad inserted therein to cushion the wearer's knees when in the kneeling position.
2. A pair of trousers as claimed in claim 1 in which each pocket consists of a piece of material which extends across the knee portion from one seam of the trouser leg to the opposite seam, the side edges of the piece of material being stitched onto the two trouser leg seams and the piece of material also being stitched along its lower edge to the trouser leg.
3. A pair of trousers as claimed in claim 1 in which each pocket consists of a patch pocket stitched on its two sides and bottom edge to the respective trouser leg.
4. A pair of trousers as claimed in any previous claim in which each pad for fitting into the associated pocket consists of resilient material contained within a case made of similar material to the pocket and to the material of the trousers themselves.
5. A pair of trousers substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
