Abstract

An apparatus and method for measuring the toxicity of pollutants to aquatic living organisms in which the effects of a presumed toxic substance on one or more aquatic living organisms are simultaneously measured at different concentrations of the toxic substance in a continuous liquid flow, the apparatus comprising tanks (1,2) for storing the toxic substance in liquid form and unpolluted dilution water, two headers (3) connecting the tanks to a peristaltic pump (4), the pump being adapted by having flexible tubes (5) of different diameters simultaneously to supply preselected differently proportioned amounts of toxic liquid and dilution water to tanks (12(a), 12(b), 12(c)) containing the organisms to be tested. The apparatus is suitable for use in the laboratory and also in the field for testing, for example, river water, lake water and industrial waste.
